Food Industry In ArgentinaBased on its strong agricultural sector, Argentina is the eighth largest food producer in the world and the fifth largest food exporter. Annually, about 35 million hectares are grown, including grains, oilseeds, industrial crops, vegetables and fruits. Altogether, the agricultural industry has the greatest potential for growth in the country.

At present, about 50% of argentine companies are somehow involved in the food industry, and account 38% of total exports, 12.4% of the country’s GDP and 11% of employment. In the first 11 months of 2013, exports of food products reached USD 27,1 billion, representing over 36,3% of Argentina international sales.

The main export destination for Argentine food is Asia, where the Middle East region has turned into a truly dynamic destination. In the first 11 months of 2013, Argentina sold USD 2.2 billion to this region, being Cereals, Vegetable oils, Meat and Oleaginous seeds the main items traded. All of them represent, in aggregate, over 90% of the food exported to the Middle East. Within the stated sectors, some products stand out, like Barley, Soybean Oil and Maize, which exports reach over USD 500 million.

The United Arab Emirates, and especially Dubai, performs as a business hub of vital importance for the region. Through UAE, Argentina has been capable of conducting business in other countries of the CCG (Gulf Cooperation Council: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Oman and Yemen).

Fundacion Exportar as Argentina’s export promotion agency coordinates the Argentine pavilion in more than 100 international fairs around the world. In the food industry sector alone, Fundacion Exportar participates in important events in the European Union, United States, China, Middle East, and Latin America. In this edition of Gulfood in Dubai, the 487 m2 Argentine pavilion will gather more than 50 Argentine companies of the food industry.
