D.O. Ca. Rioja Bodegas Age

In 1881, Félix Azpilicueta founded Bodegas Azpilicueta,

nowadays known as Bodegas AGE, in Fuenmayor, in the

heart of the Rioja Alta.

Over a century later, Bodegas AGE ref lect the efforts of the

various generations which have devoted their lives to

making and ageing prestigious Rioja wines.

The wines of this bodega possess all the traditional charac-

teristics of the typical Rioja wines, whose f lavour has

triumphed all over the world.

The vineyards are mainly made up of the Tempranillo,

Mazuelo and Graciano varieties.

Vinification takes place in 165 vats. The total grape-recep-

tion capacity is 7,000,000 kilos.

Of the 30,000 barrels, 70% are made of American oak and

30% of French oak. The bottle cellar has capacity for

2,000,000 bottles

Location: Set in the Ebro Valley. Bordered to the north by the Sierra

de Cantabria and to the south by the Sierra de la Demanda.

Surface Area: 57,000 hectares.

Type of soil:Clay-limestone, clay-ferrous and alluvial soils. The diversity

of the land and the climate have resulted in the winegrowing

region being divided into three subzones: Rioja Alta, Rioja

Baja and Rioja Alavesa.

Climate: Atlantic climate in the Rioja Alta, Mediterranean - Conti-

nental in the Rioja Baja, and a mixture of Atlantic and Medi-

terranean inf luences in the Rioja Alavesa. As the lands of the

Rioja descend from west to east, so the climate gets drier and

warmer.

Grape Variety: The Tempranillo grape

makes up 61% of the vine-

yards of the Denominación.

It is regarded as an autocht-

honous variety of La Rioja. It

has an open, honest palate,

Interesting in young wines

And velvety when aged. Other typical varieties of the D.O.

are Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo and Viura.
