PRESENTACIÓN ...E PARA COMER, LUGO

Chegamos este ano á cuarta edición da guía-anuario …E para comer, Lugo, a aposta da Asociación Provincial de Empresarios de Hostelería de Lugo (APEHL) por promocionar a nosa provincia desde o punto de vista turístico. En entregas anteriores desta pu-blicación percorremos as comarcas luguesas, as festas populares e singulares dos concellos e as rutas xacobeas, respectivamente. Neste cuarto número quixemos facer un recoñecemento aos 67 termos municipais que integran a provincia de Lugo, reafirmando unha vez máis que somos a asociación que agrupa aos hosteleiros de toda a provincia.

A vocación desta guía segue a ser difundir os atractivos da provin-cia luguesa, principalmente entre os visitantes foráneos. De aí que teña unha ampla distribución en habitacións de hotel, oficinas de turismo e feiras do sector. A propia concepción do libro, sinxela e moi gráfica, e o feito de optar polo inglés como segundo idioma, reforzan esta aposta por “vender” Lugo a todos os que nos visitan ou poden chegar a facelo.

Deste xeito, pretendemos que este …E para comer, Lugo se con-virta nunha ferramenta útil nas mans dos hosteleiros, os turope-radores, a Administración turística e, moi especialmente, todos aqueles que a empregarán como guía de consulta. Este ano que-remos ofrecerlles un percorrido rápido (pero intenso) por todos os concellos lugueses, un mosaico de paisaxes, patrimonio e cultura incriblemente variado para unha provincia tan pequena.

Somos conscientes de que os hosteleiros debemos custodiar un capital importantísimo, un intanxible chamado “provincia de Lugo” no que conflúen natureza, historia, etnografía e gastronomía. A nosa Asociación, en particular, decidiu sintetizar todo este con-glomerado de sensacións baixo a marca …E para comer, Lugo. Entendemos, e así nolo confirman as estatísticas, que a gastrono-

mía está á cabeza das preferencias e motivos de satisfacción dos nosos visitantes.

O sector da hostelería é o principal nexo de unión entre un territo-rio e aqueles que o visitan. Somos conscientes da importancia do noso traballo na consolidación da imaxe de Lugo e a fidelización do turismo. O labor de APEHL enfócase dun xeito decidido nesta direc-ción, co apoio dos nosos asociados, das diversas Administracións e de todos os implicados no sector hosteleiro-turístico. Sumamos esforzos no obxectivo común que nos une: poñer a provincia de Lugo no mapa dos mellores destinos.

Alcanzamos este año la cuarta edición de la guía-anuario …E para comer, Lugo, la apuesta de la Asociación Provincial de Empresarios de Hostelería de Lugo (APEHL) por promocionar nuestra provincia desde el punto de vista turístico. En entregas anteriores de esta pu-blicación recorrimos las comarcas lucenses, las fiestas populares y singulares de los municipios y las rutas jacobeas, respectivamente. En este cuarto número quisimos hacer un reconocimiento a los 67 términos municipales que integran la provincia de Lugo, re-afirmando una vez más que somos la asociación que agrupa a los hosteleros de toda la provincia.

La vocación de esta guía sigue siendo difundir los atractivos de la provincia lucense, principalmente entre los visitantes foráneos. De ahí que tenga una amplia distribución en habitaciones de hotel, oficinas de turismo y ferias del sector. La propia concepción del libro, sencilla y muy gráfica, y el hecho de optar por el inglés como segundo idioma, refuerzan esta apuesta por “vender” Lugo a todos los que nos visitan o pueden llegar a hacerlo.

De esta forma, pretendemos que este …E para comer, Lugo se convierta en una herramienta útil en las manos de los hosteleros,

los turoperadores, la Administración turística y, muy especialmente, todos aquellos que la utilizarán como guía de consulta. Este año queremos ofrecerles un recorrido rápido (pero intenso) por todos los municipios lucenses, un mosaico de paisajes, patrimonio y cul-tura increíblemente variado para una provincia tan pequeña.

Somos conscientes de que los hosteleros debemos custodiar un capital importantísimo, un intangible llamado “provincia de Lugo” en el que confluyen naturaleza, historia, etnografía y gastronomía. Nuestra Asociación, en particular, decidió sintetizar todo este con-glomerado de sensaciones bajo la marca …E para comer, Lugo. Entendemos, y así nos lo confirman las estadísticas, que la gastro-nomía está a la cabeza de las preferencias y motivos de satisfac-ción de nuestros visitantes.

El sector de la hostelería es el principal nexo de unión entre un territorio y aquellos que lo visitan. Somos conscientes de la im-portancia de nuestro trabajo en la consolidación de la imagen de Lugo y la fidelización del turismo. La labor de APEHL se enfoca de forma decidida en esta dirección, con el apoyo de nuestros aso-ciados, de las diversas Administraciones y de todos los implicados en el sector hostelero-turístico. Sumamos esfuerzos en el objetivo común que nos une: poner la provincia de Lugo en el mapa de los mejores destinos.

SAÚDA...E PARA COMER, LUGO

Quero saudar a través destas liñas aos lectores da guía ...E para comer, Lugo. A cidade e a provincia da muralla romana mellor conservada do mundo resulta unha parada obrigada tanto para os visitantes como para os locais amantes da boa mesa.

O pulpo á feira, protagonista de case todas as festas _entre elas, o sonado San Froilán_, a empanada, o caldo galego, as troitas, as verduras das hortas, as coñecidas cortiñas lucenses, e como non, os sabores auténticos das súas aprezadas carnes, desde o capón de Vilalba ata os chuletóns de tenreira ou porco ou as típicas

androllas e botelos, constitúen as materias primas fundamentais dos menús lucenses, un xeito de se achegar tamén a coñecer o carácter dunha xente que poboa a provincia territorialmente máis extensa da nosa comunidade.

Nos máis de 300 acontecementos gastronómicos que se celebran ao longo do ano en toda a xeografía galega Lugo é sempre referen-te. O traballo da Asociación Provincial de Empresarios de Hostelería de Lugo (APEHL), presidida por Cheché Real, axuda a combinar a faceta máis profesional da gastronomía de vangarda da nosa era, vinculada aos mellores restauradores e sumilleres galegos, coa cultura herdada dos nosos antepasados xeración tras xeración.

Dende aquí agradezo aos membros da Asociación, así como a todos os lucenses e visitantes que xa coñecen esta terra e aos que desexan achegarse a descubrir os seus segredos, o traballo constante e a ilusión depositada en cada proxecto.

Con cada nova ilusión, con cada novo paso, contribuímos entre todos a vivir Lugo, unha cidade e unha provincia na que conviven os ecos do esplendor do Imperio romano, as brisas da Mariña e os ventos das altas montañas do Caurel e dos Ancares, os mosteiros da escarpada Ribeira Sacra ou o horizonte manso que debuxa a Terra Chá.

Quiero saludar a través de estas líneas a los lectores de la guía ...E para comer, Lugo. La ciudad y la provincia de la muralla romana mejor conservada del mundo resulta una parada obligada tanto para los visitantes como para los locales amantes de la buena mesa.

El pulpo á feira, protagonista de casi todas las fiestas _entre ellas,

el sonado San Froilán_, la empanada, el caldo gallego, las truchas, las verduras de las huertas, las conocidas cortiñas lucenses, y cómo no, los sabores auténticos de sus apreciadas carnes, desde el capón de Vilalba hasta los chuletones de ternera o cerdo o las típicas androllas y botelos, constiuyen las materias primas funda-mentales de los menús lucenses, una forma de acercarse también a conocer el carácter de una gente que puebla la provincia territo-rialmente más extensa de nuestra comunidad.

En los más de 300 acontecimientos gastronómicos que se cele-bran a lo largo del año en toda la geografía gallega, Lugo es siem-pre referente. El trabajo de la Asociación Provincial de Empresarios de Hostelería de Lugo (APEHL), presidida por Cheché Real, ayuda a combinar la faceta más profesional da gastronomía de vanguardia de nuestra era, vinculada a los mejores restauradores y sumilleres gallegos, con la cultura heredada de nuestros antepasados gene-ración tras generación.

Desde aquí agradezco a los miembros de la Asociación, así como a todos los lucenses y visitantes que ya conocen esta tierra y a los que desean acercarse a descubrir sus secretos, el trabajo constan-te y la ilusión depositada en cada proyecto.

INTRODUCCIÓN

La provincia de Lugo tiene poco menos de 10.000 kilómetros cuadrados de extensión, una

superficie que se reparte, de forma muy variable, entre los 67 municipios que la conforman.

Encontramos municipios grandes, pequeños y minúsculos, pero si hay algo que los caracteriza a todos es la afortunada fusión de naturaleza, patrimonio histórico y cultura.

The province of Lugo covers slightly less than 10,000 square kilometres, a varied area spread

over the 67 municipalities which make it up.

Large, small and tiny municipalities can be found here, but if there is something which characterizes them all it is the delightful fusion of nature, historical heritage and culture.

superficie que se reparte, de xeito moi variable, entre os 67 concellos que a conforman.

Atopamos municipios grandes, pequenos e minúsculos, pero se hai algo que os caracteriza a todos é a afortunada fusión de natureza, patrimonio histórico e cultura.

El municipio, junto con la parroquia, es el alma de la división territorial gallega. No sólo porque en él se basa la célula administrativa más próxima al ciudadano, sino también porque constituye en sí mismo una unidad cultural e histórica muy consolidada.

The municipality, together with the parish, is the soul of territorial division in Galicia. Not only because the administrative centre closest to the citizen is based here, but also because it constitutes in itself a very consolidated cultural and historical unity.

La provincia de Lugo es, pues, un mosaico constituido por 67 microcosmos singulares, cada uno de los cuales merece por sí mismo una visita.

El viajero encontrará en los concellos de la provincia un medio natural hermoso e intacto, numerosas joyas patrimoniales y una rica cultura, especialmente en el terreno gastronómico.

The province of Lugo is a mosaic, consisting of 67 individual microcosms, each of which on its own is worth a visit.

In the council areas of the region, travellers will find a beautiful, intact natural environment, numerous patrimonial gems and a rich culture, most especially when it comes to cuisine.

Esta pluralidad de los territorios municipales lleva implícita la variedad. La provincia lucense despliega una amplia gama de paisajes, desde la salvaje costa cantábrica hasta las dulces curvas del Miño en torno a la capital y del Sil en la Ribeira Sacra, pasando por las llanuras centrales y las sierras orientales. Mar, montaña, ríos, planicies... De todo hay en los municipios y comarcas que conforman la provincia de Lugo.

The diversity of the municipal territories is plain to see. The province of Lugo offers a wide range of landscapes, from the wild Cantabrian coast to the gentle curves of the Miño around the capital and of the Sil in the Ribeira Sacra, passing through the central plains and the mountain ranges to the east. Sea, mountains, rivers, plains...you can find everything in the municipalities and regions which make up the province of Lugo.

Esta pluralidade dos territorios municipais leva implícita a variedade. A provincia luguesa desprega unha ampla gama de paisaxes, dende a brava costa cantábrica ata as doces curvas do Miño arredor da capital e do Sil na Ribeira Sacra, pasando polas chairas centrais e as serras orientais. La capital provincial, una ciudad bimilenaria, supo preservar uno de los mejores legados romanos de la Península Ibérica, con su Muralla como pieza emblemática.

Este monumento fue declarado en 2000 Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco, un justo reconocimiento que contribuyó de forma decisiva a su popularización.

The provincial capital, a two thousand year old city, has preserved one of the best legacies of the Romans in the Iberian Peninsula, with the wall as its prized possession.

This monument was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000 by Unesco, a well deserved acknowledgement which contributed significantly to its popularity.

Las reducidas dimensiones de la provincia, junto con unas comunicaciones muy mejoradas en los últimos años, permiten programar diversas rutas y sumergirse así en la diversidad paisajística y monumental de las tierras lucenses.

Las distancias por carretera son reducidas y los atractivos para el viajero, abundantes y variados.

The modest size of the province, together with a recently improved transport service, has allowed for the development of a variety of routes as well as absorption into the diversity of the landscapes and monuments of the Lugo area.

The distances by road have been reduced and attractions for the traveller are abundant and varied.

INTRODUCCIÓN

Entre los valores de la provincia de Lugo destaca de forma especial la gastronomía, que también se construye municipio a municipio. Son numerosas las especialidades locales y muy amplia la nómina de hosteleros.

Todos ellos saben sacarle partido a los excelentes productos autóctonos, elaborando recetas que van desde la tradición secular hasta los últimos destellos de la vanguardia.

Amongst the valuable aspects of the province of Lugo is the cuisine, which also varies from municipality to municipality. The local specialities are numerous and there is an extensive range of places to eat.

All of these take advantage of the excellent local products, elaborating recipes which are centuries old, right up to the last glitters of the Avant-Garde.

Entre os valores da provincia de Lugo salienta de xeito especial a gastronomía, que tamén se constrúe concello a concello. Son numerosas as especialidades locais e moi ampla a nómina de hosteleiros.

El paisaje de los municipios de Lugo sólo se puede comparar con su paisanaje. Los pobladores de esta provincia, desde los albores de los tiempos, son gentes afables y abiertas al viajero, deseosas de compartir con los visitantes las bondades de un territorio bendecido por la naturaleza y enriquecido por la huella humana.

The landscape of the municipalities of Lugo can only be compared with its citizens. The inhabitants of this province, from the dawns of civilisation, have been affable people, welcoming to travellers, wanting to share with visitors the delights of a land blessed by nature and enriched by humans.

A paisaxe dos concellos de Lugo só se pode comparar coa súa paisanaxe. Os poboadores desta provincia, desde os albores dos tempos, son xentes afables e abertas ao viaxeiro, desexosas de compartir cos visitantes as bondades dun territorio bendicido pola natureza e enriquecido pola pegada humana.

UNA PROVINCIA, 67 PARAÍSOS

Abadín es un municipio caracterizado por los

paisajes de montaña. Parte de su territorio está

atravesado por la Serra do Xistral, que marca

el borde sur de la meseta de Lugo. Por Aba-

dín discurre un tramo del Camino Norte hacia

Santiago, una ruta cada vez más concurrida.

El patrimonio histórico es muy abundante, con

monumentos como la iglesia parroquial de

Santa María de Abadín, el cruceiro de Corvite

o el pazo de Luaces. En materia gastronómica

destacan el grelo (brote de hojas del nabo), los

chuletones y los cremosos quesos.

The municipality of Abadín is characterized by

mountainous landscape. Part of its territory

is crossed by the Serra do Xistral mountain

range, which marks the southern border of the

Lugo plateau. A stretch of the Northern Way to

Santiago runs through Abadín, a route which is

becoming more and more popular. This area

boasts a significant amount of historical herita-

ge, with monuments such as the parish church

of Santa María de Abadín, the stone cross of

Corvite and the Luaces country estate. As for

cuisine, grelos (turnip greens), T-bone steaks

and soft cheeses are of particular significance.

UNA PROVINCIA, 67 PARAÍSOS...E PARA COMER, LUGO

El municipio de Alfoz tiene una cantidad impor-

tante de pazos y casas solariegas, tales como

los pazos de Carballido, Allegue o Adelán. Pero,

sobre todo, destacan la fortaleza de Pardo de

Cela y la ruta turística del mismo nombre, una

travesía por los lugares que marcaron la vida

del célebre mariscal gallego. Otra ruta intere-

sante es la de Pena Abaladoira.

En cuanto a parajes naturales, la Fraga Vella, el

río Ouro o la Serra do Xistral ofrecen al visitante

unas vistas espectaculares.

The municipality of Alfoz has a significant num-

ber of country estates and ancestral homes,

such as those of Carballido, Allegue and Adelán.

However of most repute is the fortress of Pardo

de Cela and the tourist trail of the same name,

which passes through the places which mark

the life of the famous Galician marshal. Another

interesting trail is that of Pena Abaladoira.

As for nature spots, the Fraga Vella, the river

Ouro and the Serra do Xistral mountain range

offer the visitor some spectacular views.

ALFOZ

Antas de Ulla destaca a nivel gastronómico por

el pan de Antas, los quesos de Arzúa-Ulloa y las

truchas del río Ulla. Además de este reclamo

para el paladar, también se puede disfrutar

de elementos patrimoniales como las iglesias

de Santa María de Olveda, San Lourenzo de

Peibás, Santa María de Alvidrón o San Andrés

de O Rial, todas ellas con elementos románicos,

o la fortaleza de Castro de Amarante.

El antiguo balneario de Frádegas, con sus

aguas sulfurosas, se encuentra en un bello

paraje al lado del río.

Antas de Ulla is notable in terms of gastronomy

for the bread of Antas, the cheeses of Arzúa-

Ulloa and the trout from the river Ulla.

As well as these delights for the palate, you

can also enjoy patrimonial attractions such as

the churches of Santa María de Olveda, San

Lourenzo de Peibás, Santa María de Alvidrón

and San Andrés de O Rial, all of which contain

Romanesque elements, as well as the fortress

of Castro de Amarante.

Este municipio se encuentra en plena ruta de

peregrinación a Santiago, concretamente en

el Camino Primitivo. Para amantes del sende-

rismo, el bosque de A Marronda ofrece varias

rutas señalizadas.

El municipio cuenta con áreas recreativas don-

de disfrutar de la naturaleza, como las situadas

en los nacimientos de los ríos Eo y Neira.

El principal atractivo gastronómico local es

el butelo, un embutido de costillas de cerdo

aliñado con pimentón que se sirve como parte

del cocido. La zona es ideal para la recogida de

setas, que abundan en los prados y bosques.

Entre los monumentos más destacados se

encuentran las iglesias de San Miguel da Braña,

Santiago de Córneas o A Fontaneira.

This municipality can be found on the main

pilgrimage route to Santiago, specifically on

the Primitive Way. For those who enjoy hiking,

the forest of A Marronda offers various marked

trails.

The town council offers recreation areas where

you can enjoy nature, such as those situated at

the sources of the rivers Eo and Neira.

The principal local gastronomic attraction is the

butelo, a stuffing of pork ribs seasoned with

paprika which is served as part of cocido, a

typical stew. The area is a great place to collect

mushrooms, of which there are many in the

meadows and forests.

Amongst the most notable monuments are the

churches of San Miguel da Braña, Santiago de

Córneas and A Fontaneira.

En el municipio se alternan áreas montañosas,

como la Serra do Pico, con valles como el que

In this municipality mountainous areas, such as

the Serra do Pico, are contrasted with valleys

Begonte es uno de los municipios de la Terra

Chá (Tierra Llana), extensa planicie de la zona

central de la provincia. Está atravesado por

el Camino Norte hacia Santiago y cuenta con al-

bergue de peregrinos. En Baamonde y otras lo-

calidades hay preciosas playas fluviales. A nivel

cultural, una visita interesante es la casa-museo

del escultor local Víctor Corral. En Begonte es

muy característico su original belén electrónico,

que funciona sólo en fechas navideñas. El plato

típico de la zona es el cocido, con todos los

múltiples ingredientes que lo integran.

Begonte is one of the municipalities of the

Terra Chá (Flat Land), the vast plain found in

the central area of the province. It is crossed

by the Northern Way to Santiago, and provides

extensive accommodation for pilgrims.

In Baamonde and other towns there are de-

lightful beaches found beside the rivers.

On a cultural level, one interesting visit is to

the house/museum of the local sculptor Víctor

Corral. His characteristic original electronic

nativity scene, which is only in operation at

Christmas, can be found in Begonte. The typi-

cal dish of the area is cocido (stew), along with

all the many ingredients it is composed of.

The municipality of Bóveda possesses beautiful

interior landscapes, very interesting for nature

lovers. In local historical heritage, monuments

like the chapel of Ecce Homo de Rubián, the

church of San Fiz, the estate of the Marquis

of Vilaverde de Limia and the well preserved

ancestral home of the marquis of Bóveda stand

out. As for gastronomy, cocido (stew), caldo

El puerto de Burela es uno de los más desta-

cados de la costa cantábrica, de modo que el

marisco y el pescado son de primera calidad.

En especial, el bonito, que protagoniza una

concurrida feria el primer sábado de agosto.

Desde el Monte Castelo y su mirador pueden

contemplarse espléndidas vistas de la loca-

lidad y parte de la costa lucense. Uno de los

principales reclamos del municipio es el museo

etnográfico habilitado en el bonitero Reina del

Carmen. Y, por supuesto, las playas, algunas de

ellas galardonadas con la bandera azul.

The port of Burela is one of the most significant

on the Cantabrian coast, so that the seafood

and fish is of the highest quality, especially tuna,

which is the main feature of a popular fair on

the first Saturday of August. From the viewpoint

on Castelo hill you can gaze on splendid views

of the town and part of the Lugo coast. One of

the main claims to fame of this municipality is

the fishing boat Reina del Carmen which was

converted into an ethnographic museum. And

of course the beaches, some of them winners of

the Blue Flag award.

Este ayuntamiento está atravesado por el río

Miño, que se puede recorrer en un catamarán

de la Diputación. La ruta que arranca de este

municipio es la que discurre entre Os Peares y

la isla de Mayorga.

El rico patrimonio municipal tiene entre sus jo-

yas la iglesia de Temes, donde se halló un sar-

cófago romano del siglo IV, uno de los primeros

testimonios del cristianismo en Galicia. Para los

amantes del buen comer, en Carballedo tiene

especial fama la carne ó caldeiro (cocida) a la

que se dedica una feria a mediados de abril,

y también el pulpo á feira (cocido, troceado y

aliñado con sal, aceite y pimentón).

The river Miño, which you can go along in a

catamaran run by the council, runs through this

area. The road which starts in this municipa-

lity runs between Os Peares and the island of

Mayorga.

The rich heritage of the area includes amongst

its gems the church of Temes, where a Roman

sarcophagus from the fourth century can be

found, one of the earliest examples of Christia-

nity in Galicia.

For those who love good food, in Carballedo the

boiled meat ó caldeiro is particularly famous,

with a fair dedicated to it in the middle of April,

and octopus á feira (boiled, sliced and seasoned

with salt, oil and paprika).

(alineación de cruceiros) cercano a la villa de

Castro de Rei.

The municipality of Castro de Rei, in the Terra

Chá, has a rich river system which connects

the rivers Azúmara, Parga, Ladra y Támoga and

the Caque lagoon. It is also home to one of the

best Celtic forts in Galicia, Viladonga, completely

excavated with an interesting museum where

its main treasures are on display.

Castro Ribeiras do Lea is one of the most dyna-

mic towns in the area, with a large number of

services and a weekly fair where you can taste

excellent octopus á feira. It’s also worth visiting

the interesting Stations of the Cross (line of sto-

ne crosses) close to the town of Castro de Rei.

Los monumentos más llamativos son los

castillos de Doiras (declarado Bien de Interés

Cultural en 1994) y de Quindous, que con-

serva intactas dos de sus torres. También es

recomendable visitar las pallozas de Piornedo,

viviendas tradicionales anteriores a la romani-

zación.

En cuanto a la comida, los productos derivados

del cerdo, la caza mayor y menor y las truchas

son características de la gastronomía de la

zona, así como licores tradicionales como el

aguardiente de arándanos.

Cervantes can be found in the heart of the Os

Ancares mountain range, surrounded by high

peaks. This mountainous landscape can be

enjoyed on a number of different trails.

Monuments which are of particular note are the

castles of Doiras (declared Property of Cultural

Interest in 1994) and Ouindous, which still has

two of its towers intact. A visit to the round huts

of Piornedo, which were traditional dwellings

before the arrival of the Romans, is also recom-

mended.

As for food, different kinds of pork, large and

small game and trout are characteristic of the

gastronomy of the region, as well as traditional

liqueurs including one made of cranberries.

Two festivals are celebrated in August, unique

because they are so dramatic, the Queimada

Popular, in the capital of the municipality, and

the Maruxaina, in San Cibrao.

the guarantee of origin of the Ribeira Sacra, as

En el término municipal de Cospeito se en-

cuentra la laguna del mismo nombre, uno de

los humedales más importantes de Galicia

por su variedad de flora y fauna. Situado en la

Terra Chá, conserva joyas patrimoniales como

Pumares.

El cerdo es el rey de la gastronomía local, con

On the edge of the borough of Cospeito there

is a lagoon of the same name, one of the most

important wetlands in Galicia due to its variety

of flora and fauna. Situated in the Terra Chá,

it retains patrimonial gems like the Caldaloba

A Fonsagrada forma parte de la reserva de la

biosfera Eo-Oscos-Terras de Burón, que abarca

parte del occidente de Asturias y la zona orien-

tal de Lugo.

El Camino Primitivo a Santiago penetra en

Galicia por este municipio, lleno de paisajes de

montaña y rincones naturales como la fervenza

(cascada) de Vilagocende, la playa fluvial de A

Pena do Inferno o la fraga de Sanxés.

Dentro del patrimonio histórico destacan la igle-

sia de Santa María da Fonsagrada, la fortaleza

más de 20 kilómetros de playas. A Rapadoira,

Arealonga o Xuncos son algunas de las más

Desde el Pico da Frouxeira pueden contemplar-

The area is full of beautiful scenery of valleys

and riverbanks, with rural areas where you can

taste delicious cold meats or the famous trout

El municipio de Lourenzá posee uno de los

monumentos más destacados de la provincia, el

monasterio de San Salvador, fundado en el siglo

X y cuya iglesia fue reformada en el XVIII por

Casas Novoa, artífice de la fachada del Obra-

doiro de la catedral de Santiago. El conjunto

incluye un museo de arte sacro.

Lourenzá es también la capital de la faba, un

producto que cuenta en la villa con su propio

centro de interpretación y museo.

El Camino Norte a Santiago atraviesa el muni-

cipio, que también forma parte de la ruta del

mariscal Pardo de Cela.

The municipality of Lourenzá is home to one of

the most significant monuments in the province,

the monastery of San Salvador, founded in the

tenth century. Its church was renovated in the

eighteenth century by Casas Novoa, who desig-

ned the façade of the Obradoiro of the cathedral

in Santiago. It also has a museum of sacred art.

Lourenzá is also capital of the district of the

faba, which is a broad bean, a product which

is of such importance that it has its very own

interpretation centre and museum.

The Northern Way to Santiago crosses this

borough, which is also part of the “Route of

the Marshall” Pardo de Cela, a trail that covers

the areas which played a part in the defence

of Galicia by the heroic Marshall against the

imposition of the Catholic Kings in the fifteenth

century.

El casco antiguo de la ciudad es ideal para ca-

llejear y cumplir el ritual de los vinos y las tapas,

que en Lugo son exquisitas y abundantes y se

Lugo es un compendio gastronómico de lo

mejor de Galicia, el lugar ideal para probar tanto

carnes como pescados y mariscos, con el pulpo

como gran protagonista.

Para los interesados en el patrimonio artístico,

la catedral ofrece un espectacular compen-

dio de estilos y épocas y el Museo Provincial

custodia un interesante fondo de arte gallego,

arqueología y artesanía.

La ciudad respira en el parque urbano de Rosa-

lía y en los del Miño y el Rato, acondicionados

en las riberas de estos ríos.

Un catamarán que parte del área fluvial de Os

Robles permite navegar por la reserva de la

biosfera Terras do Miño, muy rica en flora y

The capital of the province is a two thousand

year old city marked by its Roman past.

The wall, 2220 metres long, is the best preser-

ved in the world from this period.

It’s possible to cover the whole perimeter of

the narrow path behind the parapet on foot, so

going for a walk here is a must.

In the year 2000 it was declared a World Heri-

tage Site.

The old part of the city is ideal for wandering

the streets and fulfilling the ritual of wine and

tapas, which are abundant and exquisite in

Lugo and are complementary in all bars.

Lugo is the gastronomic epitome of the whole

of Galicia, the ideal place to try meats as well

as fish and seafood, with octopus as the main

player.

For those interested in artistic heritage, the ca-

thedral offers a spectacular variety of styles and

periods and the Provincial Museum displays an

interesting collection of Galician art, archaeolo-

gy and handicrafts.

The city breathes in the urban park of Rosalía

and in those of the Miño and the Rato, located

on the banks of these rivers.

A catamaran which leaves from the area of the

river Os Robles allows you to sail through the

biosphere reserve Terras do Miño, which is very

rich in flora and fauna.

En Meira se encuentra el lugar del nacimiento

del río Miño, en el paraje conocido como Pedre-

gal de Irimia.

El municipio también está atravesado por el Eo,

por lo que es un buen lugar para degustar las

exquisitas truchas de este río.

A nivel histórico, ofrece vestigios como el

castro de Detrás da Valiña o el Dolmen do

Cortello y, sobre todo, el espléndido monasterio

de Santa María de Meira.

The source of the river Miño can be found in

Meira, in a place known as Pedregal de Irimia.

This municipality is also crossed by the River

Eo, making it a great place to try the exquisite

trout from this river.

As for history, the area has ruins like the fort of

Detrás da Valiña fort and the ancient tomb of

Cortello, and most of all, the splendid monastery

of Santa María de Meira.

Mondoñedo es una de las dos sedes del

Obispado de Mondoñedo-Ferrol, por lo que es

obligada la visita al conjunto formado por la ca-

tedral y el palacio episcopal, donde también se

encuentra un espléndido museo de arte sacro.

La ciudad, antaño capital de provincia, tiene

un bonito y bien conservado casco histórico,

caracterizado por los soportales y las calles

empedradas. Mención especial merece el barrio

de Os Muíños, donde pueden verse estableci-

mientos de artesanía y un museo de zuecos.

El patrimonio natural ofrece joyas como las

Covas do Rei Cintolo, que pueden visitarse, o

el área recreativa de A Fervenza. Para comer,

empanadas, cocido y, sobre todo, las afamadas

tartas de Mondoñedo.

Mondoñedo is one of the bishopric seats of the

parish of Mondoñedo-Ferrol, obliging a visit

to the cathedral and corresponding episcopal

palace, where you can also find a splendid

museum of religious art.

The city, former capital of the province, has a

beautiful and well preserved old town, charac-

terized by the colonnades and cobbled streets.

The neighbourhood of Os Muíños deserves a

special mention, where you can see handicraft

establishments and a museum of clogs.

The natural environment offers gems such as

the caves of Rei Cintolo, which you can visit, or

the recreation area of A Fervenza. To eat, try

empanadas (pies), cocido (stew) and most of all,

the famous Mondoñedo tarts.

Monforte es la segunda ciudad en importancia

de la provincia. Puede presumir de monumen-

tos como el Colegio de Nuestra Señora de la

Antigua (o de los Escolapios), con su excelente

museo de arte eclesiástico, o el monasterio de

San Vicente do Pino, hoy transformado en para-

dor de turismo, en cuyas inmediaciones quedan

vestigios de un importante barrio judío.

El Museo del Ferrocarril acredita el antiguo

esplendor de la urbe como nudo ferroviario.

Dentro del término municipal encontramos

joyas como el pazo de Tor, convertido en museo

etnográfico.

La gastronomía es variada, con exquisiteces

como las empanadas, las setas o las tortas de

chicharrones.

Monforte is the second most important city in

the province. It can boast of monuments such

as the school of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua

(or the Escolapios), with its excellent museum of

ecclesiastic art, or the monastery of San Vicente

do Pino, today transformed into a Parador (five

star state owned hotel) for tourism, which has

the remains of an important Jewish quarter in

the immediate area.

The Railway Museum accredits the former

splendour of the city as a railway junction.

Within the borough you can find treasures such

as the Tor country estate, converted into an

ethnographic museum.

The cuisine is varied, with delicacies like empa-

nadas, (pastries) mushrooms and tarts made of

chicharrones (pork scratchings).

El municipio de Monterroso le disputa a Chanta-

da el honor de ser centro geográfico de Galicia.

Destaca por la belleza de sus paisajes de

interior, con rutas como la de Pena do Corvo, a

orillas del río Ulla, o la de O Muíño do Alemán.

Es tierra de pazos (los “pazos de Ulloa” que

popularizó Emilia Pardo Bazán), destacando los

de Podente y Laxe o el del general Salgado.

Cerca de la villa se encuentra el amplia área re-

A la hora de comer, los derivados del cerdo y

Chantada’s claim to the honour of being the

geographical centre of Galicia.

It stands out for the beauty of its inland lands-

capes, with trails like that of Pena do Corvo, on

the banks of the river Ulla, or that of O Muíño do

Ulloa” which were popularized by writer Emilia

El municipio de Muras posee una naturaleza

rica y variada, con un paisaje en el que alternan

valles, montañas y bosques.

En la Serra da Gañidoira pueden verse fácil-

mente numerosos potros que pasan el año en

el monte, una de las señales de identidad del

municipio. Iglesias como las de San Pedro de

Muras, Santa María do Burgo o San Estevo de

Silán son buenos ejemplos de una arquitectura

eclesiástica modesta y elegante.

La oferta gastronómica está protagonizada por

la caza y la pesca, aunque también son muy

recomendables el cocido y el caldo.

The borough of Muras possesses rich and

varied natural scenery, which includes valleys,

mountains and forests. In the Serra da Gañi-

doira you can easily spot the many wild horses

which spend the year roaming the hills, a

symbol of the identity of the region.

Churches such as those of San Pedro de Muras,

Santa María do Burgo and San Estevo de Silán

are good examples of modest and elegant

ecclesiastic architecture.

The gastronomical offerings are dominated by

game and fish, although the cocido (stew) and

caldo (broth) are also recommended.

dos Ancares.

La capital es una hermosa villa de montaña,

is characterized by its natural richness, in the

middle of the Serra dos Ancares mountains.

The capital is a beautiful mountain town, with

architectural gems like the bridge over the

Navia, the castle of the Counts of Altamira and

the church of San Salvador de Mosteiro.

The gastronomic emblem of the municipality is

the androlla, a strong sausage which is enhan-

ced with pork rib and crackling, like the butelo

Con su relieve montañoso, el municipio de

Negueira ofrece paisajes a los que aún no ha

llegado el turismo masivo.

Se puede practicar el senderismo por rutas

como la del Valle de Ernes, rodeado de her-

mosos cerros. Dentro del patrimonio histórico

destacan el puente de la Barca de Boabdil y el

conjunto que forman la iglesia parroquial y la

rectoral.

La gastronomía local tiene como protagonistas

los butelos, las truchas y la miel de montaña.

También la caza mayor, que en la zona suele

prepararse con salsas de castañas y setas.

With its mountain relief, the municipality of

Negueira offers landscapes still untouched by

mass tourism.

You can hike along trails like that of Valle de

Ernes, surrounded by beautiful hills.

Of note amongst the historical heritage is the

Barca de Boabdil bridge and the parish church

and rectory.

The main products in local gastronomy are

butelo sausages, trout, mountain honey and

large game, which is typically prepared with

mushroom and chestnut sauces.

tains, this area offers very interesting mountai-

nous routes such as Torre de Doncos, Noceda,

Peñas de Taras, la Casa de Chancia and la

Ferrería de Bois.

The walker can cover a good number of kilome-

tres through mountainous landscape. To regain

strength, there are the androlla sausages of the

area, a wide range of pork sausages and tradi-

tional farmhouse cheeses. And for dessert nuts,

sweet chestnuts and honey from the mountains.

El Miño recorre este término municipal, creando

Situado en la comarca de A Ulloa, el municipio

de Palas de Rei posee unos parajes naturales

tan bellos como la Serra do Careón.

Son también impresionantes los torrentes de

Mácara, un conjunto de cascadas donde se

practican deportes acuáticos de nivel extremo.

En sus cercanías puede verse el bosque de

madroños más grande de Galicia. Palas tiene

un riquísimo patrimonio, encabezado por la

iglesia de San Salvador de Vilar de Donas y

el castillo de Pambre. También aquí se hallan

algunos de los “pazos de Ulloa” que inmortalizó

Pardo Bazán.

El Camino Francés atraviesa el municipio, ya

cerca de Compostela. El producto gastronómico

principal es el queso, de la denominación de

origen Arzúa-Ulloa.

Situated in the region of A Ulloa, the munici-

pality of Palas de Rei is home to some natural

areas as beautiful as that of Serra do Careón.

The torrent of Mácara is also impressive, a

group of waterfalls where you can do extreme

aquatic sports.

Nearby you can see the largest forest of tree

strawberries in Galicia. Palas has a very rich

heritage, headed by the church of San Salvador

de Vilar de Donas and the castle of Pambre.

Here you can also find some of the “country es-

tates of Ulloa” which immortalised Pardo Bazán.

The French Way crosses the municipality, now

near to Compostela. The main gastronomic

product is cheese, with the origin guarantee of

Arzúa-Ulloa.

Pantón es sinónimo de románico. El municipio

alberga excelentes templos de este estilo, que

el viajero puede recorrer en una ruta temática.

Destacan el monasterio de San Salvador de Fe-

rreira y las iglesias de San Vicente de Pombeiro

y San Miguel de Eiré, entre otros.

La naturaleza de Pantón, en la Ribeira Sacra

lucense, está definida por los ríos Sil y Miño,

que discurren entre escarpadas riberas donde

se cultiva la vid en terrazas. Tierra, por tanto, de

buenos vinos, y también de aguas medicinales

como las que nutren el balneario de Augasan-

tas.

Pantón is a synonym of Romanesque. The mu-

nicipality houses excellent temples of this style,

which the traveller can visit on a specifically

themed route.

Particularly worth a look are the monastery of

San Salvador de Ferreira and the churches of

San Vicente de Pombeiro and San Miguel de

Eiré, amongst others.

Nature of Pantón, in the part of the Ribeira Sa-

cra which lies in Lugo, is defined by the Sil and

Miño rivers, which run between steep riverbeds

where vines are grown on terraces. The land

of course, of good wine, and also of medicinal

waters like those which can be enjoyed in the

Augasantas spa.

El patrimonio histórico de este municipio nos

permite viajar al período prerromano, en los

castros excavados de Barán y As Cortes, o a la

Edad Media, en el monasterio de San Facundo

de Ribas de Miño y las iglesias de Santa María

de Loio o de San Mamede. El cañón del río Loio

es uno de los parajes naturales más destacados

del término municipal.

El Camino Francés a Compostela pasa por su

territorio, ya en las proximidades de Sarria.

En materia gastronómica, son recomendables

los embutidos y las exquisitas anguilas.

The historical patrimony of this municipality

allows us to travel back to pre-Roman history,

in the excavated forts of Barán and As Cortes,

or from the Middle Ages, the monastery of San

Facundo de Ribas de Miño and the churches

of Santa María de Loio and San Mamede. The

canyon of the river Loio is the most notable

natural area in the municipality.

The French Way to Compostela passes through

its territory, now close to Sarria.

As for gastronomy, the embutidos and exquisite

eels are recommended.

Este municipio posee uno de los campos de la

feria más hermosos de Galicia, que aprovecha

el emplazamiento natural de una carballeira

(robledal).

Las zonas bajas se alternan con otras de

montaña y el patrimonio se despliega en una

sucesión de monumentos eclesiásticos y civiles,

como la iglesia de San Xoán de Friolfe, el pazo

de Neira o la torre de Trebolle. Buena tierra para

degustar derivados del cerdo, empanadas y,

durante la feria anual de primavera (principios

de junio), el pulpo.

The local fair here takes place in one of the

most beautiful fields for such an event in the

whole of Galicia, as it takes advantage of the

natural location of a carballeira (oak grove).

The landscape varies between lower areas and

mountainous parts, while the local heritage

shows itself in a succession of ecclesiastic and

civil monuments, like the church of San Xoán de

Friolfe, the Neira country estate and the tower

of Trebolle.

This is a good place to try varieties of pork,

empanadas, and during the annual spring fair at

the beginning of June, octopus.

Enclavado en la Terra Chá, se trata de uno de

los municipios con mayor riqueza ganadera de

Galicia. El medio natural brinda la posibilidad de

hacer rutas como la de la laguna de Fonmiñá,

donde está una de las fuentes originarias del

río Miño. Desde los miradores de Carracedo y

Rioseco pueden divisarse espléndidas vistas

de la zona. En el patrimonio artístico e histórico

destacan monumentos como la iglesia de Santa

María de Bretoña, las casas de Torre y Eirexa o

la capilla de San Isidro, con su fuente milagrosa

del santo. Hay además un circuito de karting

en el que se inició al automovilismo un niño

llamado Fernando Alonso.

Buried deep in the heart of the Terra Chá, this is

one of the municipalities with the richest cattle

raising in Galicia. The natural environment

affords the possibility of taking a trip to places

such as the Fonmiñá lagoon, where there is one

of the original sources of the river Miño. From

the Carracedo and Rioseco viewpoints you can

enjoy splendid views of the area. Historical and

artistic monuments which stand out include the

church of Santa María de Bretoña, the houses

of Torre and Eirexa and the San Isidrio chapel,

with its miraculous holy fountain. There is also

a go-kart track where a little boy called Fernan-

do Alonso first began motor racing

Aquí tocan tierra gallega por primera vez los

peregrinos del Camino Francés, en un paisaje

rodeado de montañas y serenidad.

Recibe al visitante el poblado prerromano de O

Cebreiro, totalmente restaurado, con sus carac-

terísticas pallozas (una de ellas, habilitada como

museo etnográfico), la iglesia de Santa María

A Real (una de las ubicaciones legendarias del

Santo Grial) y la hospedería de San Giraldo de

Aurillac.

En el municipio se produce uno de los quesos

tradicionales gallegos, el de O Cebreiro. Se

trata de un queso fresco con una característica

forma de hongo.

This is the place where the pilgrims of the

French Way first touch Galician soil, in an area

surrounded by mountains and tranquillity.

The pre-Roman village of O Cebreiro, totally

restored, receives visitors, with its characteristic

round huts (one of them used as an ethnogra-

phic museum), the church of Santa María A

Real (one of the legendary locations of the Holy

Grail) and the hotel of San Giraldo de Aurillac.

In this borough one of the traditional Galician

cheeses is produced, O Cebreiro. It is a cheese

fresh from the farm with the characteristic

shape of a mushroom.

El municipio está atravesado por el río Sil, que

baña los viñedos de la Ribeira Sacra, y por el

Lor, conocido por sus truchas y anguilas.

Uno de los enclaves más espectaculares de

la zona es el mirador de la Pena dos Catro

Cabaleiros, situado a más de 1.000 metros de

altitud, donde confluyen los municipios de O

Incio, A Pobra do Brollón, Folgoso do Courel y

Samos.

En el patrimonio local destacan las tradiciona-

les bodegas de piedra de Vilachá de Salvadur,

donde se sigue produciendo vino para autocon-

sumo. La caza, la pesca y la matanza del cerdo

son los principales alicientes gastronómicos.

This municipality is crossed by the river Sil,

which waters the vineyards of the Ribeira Sacra,

and by the river Lor, known for its trout and

eels.

One of the most interesting spots in the area

is the viewpoint of Pena dos Catro Cabaleiros,

situated more than 1000 metres above sea

level, where the municipalities of O Incio, A

Pobra do Brollón, Folgoso do Courel and Samos

converge.

Of note regarding local patrimony are the tradi-

tional stone wine cellars of Vilachá de Salvadur,

where they still produce wine for self-consump-

tion. Game, fish and the traditional killing of the

pig are the main gastronomical attractions.

Este municipio tiene numerosos atractivos

naturales, como el entorno de la ermita de Nosa

This municipality has numerous natural attrac-

tions, such as the setting of the chapel of Nosa

Señora das Neves and the caves of Pradocelo

and O Couso da Leira.

Churches such as those of San Pedro de

Ermunde and Santa María de Fraialde stand out

amongst the historical heritage, as well as the

Fondón estate and the medorras (neolithic fune-

ral burial mounds) of A Chafarica and A Rega.

A Pontenova está atravesada por el río Eo, ya

próximo a su desembocadura en Ribadeo. En

sus aguas se crían excelentes truchas, a las

que se dedica una feria cada primero de mayo.

El patrimonio local es muy rico, destacando los

viejos hornos del hierro en la capital munici-

pal y la cercana ferrería de Bogo, que ha sido

modélicamente restaurada. También merecen

una visita la iglesia de A Pontenova o la Fuente

de la Santa.

A Pontenova is crossed by the river Eo, now

near to its mouth in Ribadeo. In its waters

excellent trout can be found, to which a fair is

dedicated every 1st May.

The local patrimony is very rich, especially the

old iron ovens in the municipal capital and the

nearby blacksmiths of Bogo, which has been

restored to exemplary standards.

The churches of A Pontenova and la Fuente de

la Santa are also worth a visit.

La capital de este municipio se trasladó en

los años 60, con motivo de la construcción

del embalse de Belesar. Las casas del pueblo

antiguo todavía pueden verse cuando el nivel de

la presa es muy bajo.

Los principales monumentos, como la iglesia-

fortaleza de San Juan y San Nicolás, se trasla-

daron al nuevo Portomarín piedra a piedra. La

villa es una bella localidad de calles empedra-

das y soportales donde recalan los peregrinos

del Camino Francés. En el embalse se practican

deportes náuticos y presta servicio uno de

los catamaranes turísticos de la Diputación

Provincial.

Merece la pena visitar la capilla de As Neves o

la ruta del río Ferreira, con sus antiguos molinos

y sus fuentes. Para recrear el paladar, las

empanadas de anguilas, la tarta de Portomarín

o los aguardientes tradicionales que se destilan

en la zona.

The capital of this municipality was moved in

the 1960’s, in order to construct the reservoir of

Belesar. The houses of the former town can still

be seen when the level of the dam is very low.

The main monuments, like the church-fortress

of San Juan and San Nicolás, were moved to

the new Portomarín stone by stone.

The town has many beautiful cobbled streets

and colonnades where the pilgrims of the

French Way go deeper. In the reservoir you can

do nautical sports and go one one of the tourist

catamarans of the Provincial Council.

It’s worth visiting the chapel of As Neves or

the path along the river Ferreira, with its old

windmills and fountains. To entertain the palate,

empanada pies containing eel, the Portomarín

tart and the traditional liqueurs which are disti-

lled in the area.

Quiroga goza de un clima casi mediterráneo, lo

que explica la proliferación de olivos y el hecho

de que en el municipio se produjera aceite.

Algunos de los viejos molinos se han recupera-

do y pueden visitarse. El vino y la miel también

son productos característicos de este municipio,

atravesado por los ríos Lor, Quiroga y Sil.

El patrimonio es riquísimo, con elementos como

el túnel de Montefurado, construido por los

romanos para desviar el curso del río y extraer

oro; los castillos de Torrenovaes y Sequeiros o

las casas grandes de Lamela y Tor.

Son también muy típicas las albarizas, cons-

trucciones circulares que servían para proteger

las colmenas de los osos.

Ouiroga enjoys an almost Mediterranean clima-

te, which explains the abundance of olive trees

and the fact that the municipality produces olive

oil.

Some of the old windmills have been restored

and can be visited. Wine and honey are also

characteristic products of this municipality,

crossed by the rivers Lor, Quiroga and Sil.

The heritage is very rich, with elements such as

the Montefurado tunnel, built by the Romans to

divert the course of the river and extract gold;

the castles of Torrenovaes and Sequeiros and

the large houses of Lamela and Tor.

Also very typical are the albarizas, circular

constructions which were used to protect the

beehives from bears.

Municipio muy próximo a la ciudad de Lugo,

forma parte de la reserva de la biosfera Terras

do Miño.

Tiene áreas naturales de gran valor, como As

Insuas (conjunto de islas fluviales en el Miño),

la Lagoa do Rei o las cuencas de los ríos Parga,

Ladra y Támoga.

Rábade es un destino habitual de pescadores y

practicantes de remo, con numerosos senderos

por los que el caminante puede adentrarse en

la naturaleza.

En el patrimonio histórico destacan la casa

del Portazgo, el pazo de Miraflores o la Ponte

Vella. Las carnes y los derivados del cerdo son

excelentes en la zona.

This municipality is very close to the city of

Lugo, forms part of the Terras do Miño biosphe-

re reserve.

It has natural areas of great value, like As

Insuas (a group of islands in the river Miño), la

Lagoa do Rei (the Rei lagoon) and the basins of

the rivers Parga, Ladra and Támoga.

Rábade is a common destination for fishermen

and rowers, with numerous pathways which

allow walkers to immerse themselves in nature.

As for local historical monuments, the house

of Portazgo, the Miraflores estate and the old

bridge are particularly worth seeing. Meats and

all types of pork are excellent in this area.

El Camino Norte a Santiago penetra en Galicia

por este municipio, ubicado junto a la ría que

separa Galicia y Asturias.

En Ribadeo se encuentran algunas de las

playas más hermosas del Cantábrico, como la

de Augasantas o As Catedrais, célebre por sus

formaciones rocosas. La erosión marina creó

en ella cuevas a las que sólo se puede acceder

con la marea baja.

La capital municipal es una hermosa villa con

monumentos como el pazo de Ibáñez, que per-

teneció al marqués de Sargadelos, o el fuerte

de San Damián.

Merecen también una visita la iglesia de San

Pedro de Arante, el pazo de Cedofeita y el pin-

toresco pueblo marinero de Rinlo, con su puerto

The Northern Way to Santiago enters Galicia

through this municipality, located along with the

river which separates Galicia and Asturias.

In Ribadeo you can find some of the most

beautiful beaches of the Cantabrian sea, like

those of Augasantas and As Catedrais, famous

for its rock formations. Sea erosion has created

caves there which can only be visited when the

tide is low.

The capital of the borough is a beautiful town

with buildings like the country estate of Ibáñez,

which belonged to the marquis of Sargadelos,

and the fort of San Damián.

It’s also worth visiting the church of San Pedro

de Arante, the Cedofeita estate and the pictu-

resque seaside town of Rinlo, with its natural

harbour. Seafood and fish are excellent here.

El río Sil discurre por este municipio encor-

setado entre cañones espectaculares. Puede

contemplarse a gran altura desde miradores

como el de Pena Ladeira.

En la capital, San Clodio, hay una amplia y bien

acondicionada playa fluvial. En cuanto al patri-

monio histórico y cultural, merecen mención las

iglesias de Torbeo y de San Clodio, el Pazo da

Casa Nova y los vestigios de las minas auríferas

romanas. La gastronomía es magnífica, con

productos locales como la cereza, el aceite,

la miel, las castañas o la tarta de nueces de

Torbeo.

nestled between spectacular canyons. You can

observe it from a great height at viewpoints

such as that of Pena Ladeira.

In the capital, San Clodio, there is a wide and

well kept beach by the river. As for historical

and cultural heritage, the churches of Torbeo

and San Clodio, the estate da Casa Nova and

the remains of the Roman gold mines deserve

a mention. The cuisine here is magnificent,

with local products like cherries, olive oil, honey,

sweet chestnuts and the Torbeo nutty tart.

Este municipio cuenta con joyas como las

iglesias de San Xoán de Baos y San Xurxo de

Piquín, el puente sobre el río Eo, los vestigios

célticos o precélticos en A Insua o los restos

romanos de Montefurado, donde se cree que

hubo actividad minera.

Existen rutas para visitar todos estos yacimien-

tos arqueológicos y otras de naturaleza, como

la que conduce al Pico Castro. En la gastrono-

mía cabe destacar las truchas del río Eo, los

productos de la caza, los derivados del cerdo,

las castañas, las filloas y el queso.

This municipality is home to gems such as the

churches of San Xoán de Baos and San Xurxo

de Piquín, the bridge over the river Eo, the Celtic

and pre-Celtic remains on A Insua and the

Roman remains of Montefurado, where there is

believed to have been mining activity.

There are trails for visiting all these archaeolo-

gical digs and other ones which go through na-

tural areas, like the one which goes to the Pico

Castro. Cuisine is dominated by trout from the

river Eo, game, pork varieties, sweet chestnuts,

filloas (crêpes) and cheese.

La naturaleza de Riotorto puede disfrutarse en

lugares como el área recreativa de Ferreiravella

o el monte de Fulgueiral.

En la zona floreció la herrería, oficio que todavía

pervive y cuya memoria se conserva en la ruta

dos ferreiros. La historia local ha dejado monu-

mentos como la iglesia parroquial de San Pedro

de Aldurfe o los cruceiros de Aldurfe y O Franco.

Los derivados del cerdo, la ternera, la caza

mayor, el queso y las filloas conforman lo mejor

de la oferta gastronómica local, coronada por la

famosa tarta de Riotorto.

The nature in Riotorto can be enjoyed en places

like the recreation area of Ferreiravella or

Fulgueiral hill.

In the area iron founding flourished, a trade

which continues to survive and whose memory

is conserved in the ironmongers trail. Local

history has left monuments such as the parish

church of San Pedro de Aldurfe and the stone

crosses of Aldurfe and O Franco.

Pork varieties, beef steak, large game, cheese

and filloas make up the best local gastronomy,

crowned by the famous Riotorto tart.

Este municipio jacobeo, uno de los más im-

portantes del Camino Francés, tiene actividad

monástica documentada desde el siglo VI.

Su espléndido monasterio está habitado por

una comunidad de monjes benedictinos y pue-

de verse en visitas guiadas.

En las proximidades se encuentra la capilla

prerrománica del Ciprés, junto a la cual se

acondicionó un bonito paseo fluvial.

La joya natural de Samos es el valle del río

Lóuzara, una zona de bosques, aldeas y cuevas

donde se creó una ruta de esculturas que re-

cuerda al poeta Fiz Vergara Vilariño. Las carnes

de ternera y de cerdo, las truchas y anguilas

y la castaña conforman una oferta gastronó-

mica exquisita. Y de postre, los bizcochos de

Manxarín.

This Jacobean municipality, one of the most

important on the French Way, has had monastic

activity documented since the sixth century.

A community of Benedictine monks inhabits its

splendid monastery, through which you can take

a guided tour.

Nearby you can find the pre-Romanesque

chapel of Ciprés, along with which there is a

beautiful walk along the river. The natural trea-

sure of Samos is the valley of the river Lóuzara,

an area of forests, hamlets and caves where a

trail of sculptures commemorating the poet Fiz

Vergara Vilariño has been created. Beef and

pork, trout, eels and chestnuts make up an ex-

quisite gastronomical offering. And for dessert,

the Manxarín sponge cakes.

Sarria es la localidad más importante del

Camino Francés a Compostela, con un tráfico

constante de peregrinos y amplia oferta de

En su rico patrimonio histórico destacan el

monasterio de A Magdalena, la torre de los

Batallón o las iglesias de Santa Marina y San

Salvador, en la parte alta de la villa.

El casco viejo es una sucesión de casas de pie-

dra y plazuelas a lo largo de calles empinadas.

El municipio se asienta en el valle que atraviesa

el río Sarria, con lugares como el parque fluvial

de O Chanto o el sendero de Ribela.

En la oferta gastronómica local destaca el

pulpo, que puede comerse en los alpendres

(cobertizos) del campo de la feria los días de

mercado (6, 20 y 27 de cada mes). También

son excelentes los embutidos, las empanadas y

las carnes.

Sarria is the most important town on the French

Way to Compostela, with constant traffic of

pilgrims and a large offering of accommodation.

Particularly of note in its rich historical heritage

are the A Magdalena monastery, the tower de

los Batallón and the churches of Santa Marina

and San Salvador, in the higher part of the town.

The old part is a succession of stone houses

and small squares built on steep streets.

This municipality sits in the valley which is cros-

sed by the river Sarria, with places like the river

Este municipio de la Ribeira Sacra está atrave-

This municipality of the Ribeira Sacra is crossed

by the river Sil, which flows between its canyons

and terraced vineyards.

Amongst the natural areas the river beach of A

Cova and its viewpoint stand out.

O Saviñao produces some of the most famous

red wines in the area. The churches of San

Estevo de Ribas de Miño and San Paio de

Diomondi, the A Candaira tower and the Vilelos

estate are particularly notable aspects of the

cultural heritage here.

The interesting museum of Arxeriz restores and

exhibits the ethnographic heritage of the Ribeira

Sacra.

O Saviñao is also one of the municipalities with

the largest number of forts, guarding evidence

of at least 27 settlements.

The local archaeological jewel is the dolmen of

Abuime, in an excellent state of preservation.

de los cañones más espectaculares del río Sil e

impresionantes miradores.

Una ruta recorre los miradores de Cotarro,

Santiorxo, Cadeiras (donde hay un santuario

dedicado a la Virgen de los Remedios), A Pena

do Castelo y Doade. Otras rutas recomendables

son las de los molinos del Xábrega y los viñedos

de la Ribeira Sacra.

En cuanto al patrimonio histórico, destacan

los restos del enclave romano de Proentia,

en Proendos, e iglesias como las de Canabal,

Lobios y Bolmente.

Para dar placer al paladar, vinos tintos de

Amandi, acogidos a la denominación de origen

Ribeira Sacra, y las deliciosas roscas de Sober.

Sober is found in the very heart of the Ribeira

Sacra. Its territory includes some of the most

spectacular canyons of the river Sil with impres-

sive viewpoints.

One route covers the viewpoints of Cotarro,

Santiorxo, Cadeiras (where there is a sanctuary

dedicated to the Virgen de los Remedios (the

Virgin of the Remedies), A Pena do Castelo and

Doade.

Other recommended routes are those of the

Xábrega windmills and the vineyards of the

Ribeira Sacra.

As for historical heritage, the remains of the

Roman enclave of Proentia, in Proendos, and

churches like those of Canabal, Lobios and

Bolmente are worth a look.

And to please the palate, the red wines of

Amandi, with the guarantee of origin Ribeira

Sacra, and the delicious roscas (bread rolls) of

El municipio de Taboada tiene un interesan-

te patrimonio histórico, en el que destacan

templos románicos como el de San Pedro

de Bembibre y pazos como los del conde de

Taboada y Perrelos.

Cerca de la capital municipal se encuentra el

área recreativa de A Medela. Los productos

locales son excelentes, destacando las carnes,

el queso o la miel.

Un plato específico de este municipio es el

caldo de ósos (huesos), que tiene su fiesta

particular el Domingo de Carnaval.

The municipality of Taboada has an interesting

historical heritage, notably the Romanesque

temples like that of San Pedro de Bembibre and

estates like those of the Count of Taboada and

Perrelos.

Near to the municipal capital, you can find the

recreation area A Medela. Local products are

excellent, particularly the meats, cheese and

honey.

A dish which is unique to this area is the broth

made of ósos (bones), which has its own festival

on the Sunday of Carnival, the week before

Lent.

En Trabada hay abundancia de parajes natura-

les donde practicar el senderismo, con enclaves

como las fragas de Belosiña, Vilapena y Caba-

nela o la ría del Eo.

El patrimonio histórico es rico en iglesias y

pazos, destacando la iglesia de Vilapena, la

capilla de Vilafernando o el menhir prehistórico

de Pena Verde.

La caza y la pesca son abundantes en estas

tierras, por lo que la gastronomía se nutre de

estos productos.

El plato local más característico es la “enfariña-

da”, un exquisito postre que se elabora a base

harina, huevos, leche y sal.

you can go hiking, with spots like the forests of

Belosiña, Vilapena and Cabanela and estuary of

the river Eo.

The local heritage is rich in churches and coun-

try estates, of particular interest are the church

of Vilapena, the chapel of Vilafernando and the

prehistoric stone column of Pena Verde.

There is a lot of game and fish available in this

area, which the local cuisine makes the most of.

The most characteristic local dish is the enfari-

ñada, an exquisite dessert which is elaborated

in a base of flour, eggs, milk and salt.

Este municipio presenta un relieve montañoso,

debido a la cercanía de las sierras de Os Anca-

res y O Courel.

El territorio se caracteriza por una naturaleza

salvaje con pequeñas y dispersas aldeas de

montaña, ideal para los amantes del senderis-

Cruzado por el Camino Francés, conserva un

interesante patrimonio histórico vinculado a

la ruta, como las iglesias de Santiago, San

Cristovo y San Salvador de Toldaos o el antiguo

hospital de peregrinos.

A nivel gastronómico son sobresalientes todos

los derivados del cerdo, así como las empana-

das y los grelos. En la zona se elabora también

un queso artesanal de gran calidad.

due to its proximity to the mountains of Os

Ancares and O Courel.

The territory is characterized by untouched

nature, with tiny, dispersed mountain villages,

ideal for those who love hiking.

Crossed by the French Way, it continues to have

an interesting historical heritage linked to the

route, like the churches of Santiago, San Cristo-

vo and San Salvador de Toldaos and the former

pilgrims hospital.

The many different types of pork here dominate

the cuisine, as well as empanada pastries and

grelos (turnip greens). High quality farmhouse

cheese is also produced here.

Como su nombre indica, este término municipal

se encuentra en un valle bañado por el río Ouro.

Otra parte del territorio es montañosa, forman-

do parte de la Serra do Xistral.

Merece la pena visitar monumentos como la

iglesia de Santa Cruz, la capilla de Santa Filo-

mena y el pazo de Gradaílle, que conforman lo

más rico del patrimonio local.

O Valadouro ofrece múltiples encantos gastro-

nómicos, destacando las truchas, las anguilas,

la miel y la castaña.

En repostería son famosas las colinetas de O

Valadouro, elaboradas con los mismos ingre-

dientes que la tarta de Santiago: almendras,

huevos, azúcar y ralladura de limón.

the chapel of Santa Filomena and the Gradaílle

O Valadouro offers many gastronomical delights,

in particular, trout, honey and sweet chestnuts.

The colineta cakes of O Valadouro are famous,

elaborated with the same ingredients as the

Santiago tart: almonds, eggs, sugar and lemon

La espectacular ría do Barqueiro, que separa

las provincias de Lugo y A Coruña, es la joya del

patrimonio natural de O Vicedo.

En este término municipal se encuentran

algunas de las playas más vírgenes de la costa

de Lugo.

Las riberas del río Sor son otro enclave a tener

en cuenta, con una ruta de senderismo bien

señalizada.

El amante de los monumentos puede visitar

iglesias como San Paulo de Río Barba o San

Miguel de Negradas, la capilla de San Roque o

Vilalba es el corazón de la Terra Chá lucense,

de la que se considera capital, además de un

punto importante del Camino Norte a Santiago.

La riqueza arqueológica de la zona puede admi-

rarse en el Museo de Arqueología y Prehistoria,

uno de los más interesantes de Galicia en su

género.

En la capital municipal destacan monumentos

como la torre de los Andrade, transformada en

parador de turismo.

Para el contacto directo con la naturaleza

son buenas opciones la ruta de senderismo a

Monseivane, la playa fluvial de A Magdalena o

la charca de O Alligal.

Esta última está bien acondicionada como

piscina y ofrece aguas termales de propiedades

medicinales, a una temperatura estable de

23 grados. En la gastronomía local los reyes

indiscutibles son el queso de San Simón, con su

propia denominación de origen, y los capones.

The archaeological richness of the area can be

admired in the Museum of Archaeology and

ficant monument is the tower de los Andrade,

transformed into a Parador (five star state-run)

hotel for tourists.

For some one-to-one with nature, good options

are the hiking route of Monseivane, the beach

by the river of A Magdalena or the O Alligal lake.

This last one has been well equipped as a

swimming pool and offers thermal waters with

medicinal properties, at a stable temperature of

23 degrees.

In local gastronomy, the indisputable leaders are

the cheese of San Simón, with its own guaran-

tee of origin, and capones (a type of poultry).

Este municipio costero alberga espectaculares

Viveiro tiene un casco histórico peatonal al que

se accede por la puerta de Carlos V, el último

resto de la antigua muralla medieval.

En sus callejuelas podemos contemplar iglesias

y conventos de gran valor arquitectónico e

histórico.

Es el escenario de la Semana Santa más afa-

mada de Galicia, sólo equiparable a la de Ferrol.

En cuanto al medio natural, destacan espa-

cios como el Souto da Retorta o eucaliptal

de Chavín, que puede recorrerse andando y

alberga algunos de los eucaliptos más grandes

de Europa.

Los montes de San Roque, Castelo y O Faro o

el Pozo da Ferida son también dignos de una

visita.

Gastronómicamente destacan los pescados y

mariscos, y en especial la merluza do pincho,

pescada con anzuelo.

This coastal municipality is home to spectacular

beaches (like those of Covas, Area and Celeiro)

and a delightful estuary which the city protrudes

out into.

Viveiro has a pedestrian old town which is

accessed through the gate of Carlos V, the last

remains of the former medieval wall.

In its narrow streets you can find churches and

convents of great archaeological and historical

value.

It’s the most renowned place in Galicia to watch

the parades in Holy Week, only comparable to

those in Ferrol.

As for the natural environment, of particular

interest are areas such as el Souto da Retorta

and the eucalyptus grove of Chavín, which can

be explored on foot and is home to some of the

largest eucalyptus trees in Europe.

The hills of San Roque, Castelo and O Faro and

the well da Ferida are also worth visiting. Fish

and seafood play an important part in local

cuisine, especially merluza do pincho (hake),

caught with a hook.

Municipio de naturaleza espectacular, con

ecosistemas como las fragas del río Eume, la

Serra da Carba (ubicada dentro del conjunto de

la Serra do Xistral) o las riberas del río Trimaz.

Al lado de esta riqueza natural aparece un

variado patrimonio local, con ejemplos como

la iglesia de Candamil o la casa de la torre de

Roupar. Con respecto a la gastronomía, ésta es

una zona de gran riqueza micológica. Además

son destacables el cerdo, la carne de caza y el

pescado de río.

A spectacular municipality full of nature, with

ecosystems like the forests of the river Eume,

the Serra do Xistral) and the banks of the river

Trimaz.

Beside this natural wealth you can find a varied

local heritage, with examples such as the

Como todos los municipios de la costa de Lugo,

Xove puede presumir de playas de arena fina

y aguas cristalinas, como las de Portocelo,

Esteiro, Lago o Morás.

Junto a esta última pueden verse todavía los

restos de la antigua ballenera, una de las

últimas en cerrar sus puertas en el Cantábrico,

a mediados de los años 80.

Xove alberga algunos restos de poblamiento

prehistórico, como la mámoa (túmulo funerario)

de Romariz, y muestras patrimoniales mucho

más recientes, como la iglesia de Xuances, el

pazo de Rigueira o el hórreo de Barxa.

La gastronomía local ofrece pescados y

mariscos de primera, destacando el pulpo da

pedra (así llamado por pescarse en las rocas

de la costa). También goza de merecida fama el

lacón.

Like all the municipalities on the coast of Lugo,

Xove can boast of beaches with fine sand and

crystal clear waters, like those of Portocelo,

Esteiro, Lago and Morás.

Along with this last one you can still see the

remains of an old sailing boar, one of the last

ones to close its doors to the Cantabrian sea, in

the middle of the 1980s.

Xove is home to some remains of a prehistoric

settlement, like the mámoa (burial mound) of

Romariz, and much more recent cultural dis-

plays, like the church of Xuances, the Rigueira

estate and the hórreo (typical granary store) of

Barxa.

Local gastronomy offers first class fish and se-

afood, in particular octopus da pedra (so-called

for being found in the rocks along the coast.

The lacón (foreleg ham) here, is also deservedly

well-known.

riachuelo Alesancia y el Mera, lugar que se llama de la Luz, delimitado desde la casa de campo

en donde vivió nuestro melero Espasando y por el Mar Negro y junto al monte que se llama Faro

y por las Piedras Blancas y por la laguna hasta la otra laguna y hasta Piedrafita y por la laguna

y por el vilar que se llama del Deseo y por el campo que se llama Alesancia y por la otra Pie-drafita que está en el monte sobre Taboada por el camino que separa el límite hasta el lugar que

se llama Areas y el campo que se llama Comasio con todas las salidas y en la vuelta dos castros con toda su producción, los montes y los vallados de zarzas que allí hay con todas sus salidas y

todo lo arriba citado os la doy como obsequio y os lo concedo por medio de nuestro fiel hermano,

el abad Esperanta, para que recéis en provecho de mi alma en la iglesia que allí se construyere

y lo tengáis todo desligado de mi derecho y entregado y confirmado en vuestro derecho firme e

irrevocablemente y a quien Dios llame a la confesión en ese mismo lugar que reivindiquen todo y hagan justicia y lo defiendan de cualquier mal augurio y si después de hoy alguien quisiera

inquietaros en relación con ese lugar o en todo lo que queda escrito arriba, que sea separado de la santa comunión y que quede excluido de la asamblea de los cristianos y de la Santa Iglesia, que sea considerado con Judas el traidor como merecedor de ser condenado y que lo alcance tal castigo divino que todos los que la vean queden aterrados y los que lo oigan se estremezcan.
