VITAE

Value

Best Annual Project of the Escuela de Diseño y Arquitectura, ITESM 2012.

In Mexico, is common going to nearest small convenience stores for groceries. This is a great problem when it envolves water jugs. People improperly manipulate this type of large containers of water, causing back pain, hernias and poor posture that can lead to an accident. This project was after meticulous observation devised from an ergonomic point of view to improve the quality of life of people.

VITAE accompanies you from the store to your home and then, become the most practical water dispenser. It can be served directly to the glass without having to turn the jug over and over again.

It was created to be an All Terrain product (asphalt, wood and more without scratching the floors). It is very easy to climb stairs with it, because of the counterweight that is created. And by night, the LED night light is activated for those unexpected visits to the kitchen.

IdeaThroughout this Project the design team faced a difficult challenge; how to provide Oxxo with a new aesthetic that properly reflects its status as Mexico’s largest convenience store.Oxxo required equipment that catered to its specific needs; improved product organization, a more elegant display and, higher cooling efficiency. After 3 months of market research we generated the following aesthetic line to properly display

Based on these parameters our team was tasked with designing 3 products: A Multi Deck, a Display Cabinet Cooler and a Display Rack. Counter Insights.Normal Display Cabinet Coolers have 4 doors; two in the front and two in the back. This is unnecessary as the teller does not interact with the items displayed. Both the consumer and the supplier use the front doors. Furthermore the four door design has a visible evaporator that obstructs produce appreciation.

Based on this information our design reduced the number of doors and relocated the evaporator. No backdoors and a hidden evaporator lead to better control over the temperature, wider windows, better product organization and an overall cleaner appearance.

Multi Deck Insights A design flaw that the current Multi Decks have is the location of the plastic baskets. The baskets generate a border between the product and the consumer. However this equipment needs to be perceived as a clean and, wide space. Considering ergonomics is really important, as it affects impulse buying. The consumer needs to feel physically close to the products he is buying in order to truly appreciate them. Our design give closeness by removing the baskets as a barrier and letting the consumer place his feet beneath the machine thus placing them a good twenty centimeters closer to the produce. In the area which previously contained the baskets we integrated a special space for displaying non-cold products. Durability was an important concern during the design phase of this product. Previous iterations were made from plastic. However because of the new image that we were building for Oxxo this could not continue as plastic is perceived as cheap. To solve this issue the new design is constructed primarily from stainless Steel. This improvement gives our Multi Deck a sleek and sophisticated design that is also very durable. This new design also a features a special area for publicity, while the previous model did not. Publicity was such a big need for the brand that special stands were commissioned and placed in the store, our new design makes these.

Stove GridModular

Challenge

Achieve a better washing experience for Mexican stoves.

Firenze

Idea FirenzeThe current stoves in Mexican homes are a headache when it comes to cleaning. The stove grids will readily stick with residues, they are hindrances and larger than the sink, which makes it difficult for washing. In this project, two different conceptual proposals for Mabe grills stoves were developed.

This project was developed under the standard rules of the company and the market. Looking to build an intuitive and aesthetic product that meets the philosophy of the company. During this project developed two grids with different concepts according to their manufacturing processes and machining.

The name of this stove grid comes from the combination of “Fuerza” and “Confianza” strength with confidence. The user places their safety everyday hinting that he feels proud to have a serene stove, that is different from other on the market

The main benefit of the redesign of this grid is the way they can be washed. By being modular, its size does not bother the user when washing. The splicing mechanisms of these pieces is a male-female union magnet, which allows the separation be in a comfortable and elegant way.

These pieces are stackable to not only be easier to clean, but they also take up less space during drying. These modules were also designed to play an extra role in Mexican kitchens, can function as stand hot items directly on the user's table.

2014Wire Rod

Laberintum

LaberintumIs the symbol that unity is strength. At the same time this stove grid create a feeling of defiance toward the ordinary concepts.

What makes the difference in this grill with the existing is its modularity, its stackability and the union that has with other modules using a steel strip. Furthermore, if one of the modules become damaged, it can easily be replaced.

The design allows a reduction in material. It also reduces the risk that the pots or pans to fall, since the support areas are designed to bearing points always exist. When generating continuous forms there is less chance that the grids deform over time.

Challenge

Transform a community through urban art. Improve relationships and communication between neighbors and intensify the slum identity.

"Las Américas”, is a participatory urban art project guided by the brilliance of Spanish art collective Boa Minstura. This ambitious project takes place in a poor neighbourhood famous for it’s lack of security, in the city periphery of Querétaro, México.

Boa Minstura opened an outdraw in April 2014. They were looking for designers that wanted to be part of the world's largest urban art projec

1,142 families changed their daily reality with this project.

With the support of social foundations like Proart and the ICCAD, a pilot project began, where 30 houses were painted by residents of the neighbourhood and volunteers. After the success of the first stage, an action plan was pushed to fill the streets of “Las Americas” with color. Over 1,000 houses were painted.

“Las Americas” neighbourhood, is located on the periphery of Queretaro, over two hillsides that delimit the two most important avenues of the city. So this part of the city it is seen daily by thousands of people. The project aims to make a landscape and cultural intervention that reinforces the concept of identity in the neighbourhood.

The first stage is to paint all the houses of the neighbourhood and reunite the “barrio”. Then, build an active cultural forum for the community and then replicate all of these steps around the city.

For this great project I designed 15 facades that reflected each family’s identity and yet a continue frame. After a long investigation of textile patterns of indigenous towns, the Huichol and Otomi culture were chosen (among others) as a source of inspiration for the new facades.

Convida aims to offer a repeatable method to alter the daily reality of a cities sector. It aims to offer wellbeing and happiness to an aging population. La otra banda, the other gang in English, is a group of people living in a traditional neighborhood in Queretaro, Mexico. This name is derived from the fact that they are in the immediate vicinity of the Queretaro historical center without belonging to it. Because of their geographic location la otra banda faces several problems that go beyond the economic scale. Seniors who live in this neighborhood spend most of their time alone and bored. This is leading to a feeling of lack of purpose and to varying degrees of depression. CONVIDA aims to serve as a example to improve the elders quality of life in a repeatable method.

Gathering Information & Insight

We analyzed the needs and daily activities of seniors in the area. Seniors seek; family integration, respect and, a way to continue to be the protectors of their family. Furthermore they seek a way to accomplish these goals while maintaining a cultural identity. Convida is a system of home gardens for seniors that provides autonomy and dignity leading to a better self-esteem. Convida delivers a monthly Kit to a senior’s home. Through this kit seniors learns how to plant different vegetables and fruits depending on the month and expertise level.

Each senior can either keep a fraction of their harvest or exchange it with another member of the program. The remainder will be sold at the Sunday neighborhood market stand of the program. The program provides a complete kit that includes; an ergonomic sprout dispenser, two different vegetable trays, sprout tray, 6 biodegradable pots with nutrients, an ergonomic water dispenser and the program instructions. It also includes two house signs that show the level of expertise.

Improve the quality and redefine the current aesthetic of the Horizontal Imbera Coolers.

Challenge

Horizontal CoolerRedesign

The cleanliness and maintenance problems, were attacked by designing a door system that could be removed and let the user have a better inside access. The fixed door had a special separator to prevent bottles falling and damaging the movil door. Also, I proposed an inside container stainless steel insert with a tilt angule.

For this Horizontal Cooler, accesories suitable for the need of the user, were designed: I developed a special control/display, a container for the metal bottles tops, special inside lightning and wheels for movility.

The handle and the cooler dimensions were adjused in order to make the equipment more comfortable for the user.

Value

IdeaThe specific goal to this proyect was improve the quality and redefine the current aesthetic of the Horizontal Imbera Coolers. These cooleres normally are below the bar counter and are design only for beer bottles and jars.

In order to archive this goal, I studied the user and his interaction with the cooler. Somo insights were that the cleanliness of the equipment was very difficult, the door was often damaged by the bottles, the pastic corners were broken in most of the coolers, among others.

Selected to represent the EDA at the Design Contest of Marisa for Students 2012

This project was designed to be the scene of adventures of a boy in 2050 as part of the Design the Future Contest by Marisa for Students.

According to my research and vision for the future, homes will be more compact and families will be even smaller. Having an only child will be very common in family structures. In addition to this vision, there will be a reduction of recreational green areas for children.

Under these prerogatives, the concept for this furniture was created. The kids from the future will be able to have in their home a special space for them that emulates a tree house. In this movil space, they will explore their creativity to imagine great stories, under a new tree.

This space/furniture can adapt to diferent spaces and situations: from bookshelf, to playground, it`s user can make it happen.

Children are constantly changing, so this furniture fits the space needs they require because is not only collapsible and removable, but it has a rotating shaft that allows it to be set at the most convenient location, making use a fun experience.
