a Alejandro Vitaubet

tema de representación encadenado que interrelaciona varios niveles: virtual/real;
dentro/fuera.

Textos, bocetos, notas, dibujos...
de la deriva surgida del trabajo artístico en conversación con el discurso teórico;

sición “Back” de Raquel Ponce.
No

by learning how to learn”9
[Aprender haciendo, y hacer aprendiendo cómo
aprender].

Me
Creo que la radicalidad lleva implícita la inmediatez, la rapidez en la ejecución;

estoy descartando y discriminando otras.

parte del “Back”?

RIGHT HERE...
ON THE TIP OF MY TONGUE(or, on how art is a tool for self-knowledge according to Raquel Ponce and Gre-gorio Viera)
for Alejandro Vitaubet,
the first enthusiast
In the performative spectacle every-
body is a potential performer, from
movie stars to next-door neighbours.
Reality TV, webcams and similar phe-
nomena are the ultimate consequence
of this development.1
Sven Lütticken
It is clear, and there’s been much speculation about it, that art
is above all a system of knowledge, a tool or device for knowl-
edge used as a language and/or to approach certain open epis-
temological systems, which extend from the sensory to the
rational, and which flow cyclically and circle back into the core
spirituality of those who produce it and those of us who enjoy
it as viewers.
To speak in this way about art well into the 21st century may
seem naive to viewers and readers trained in the interstices
of the system within which art moves. However, those of us
invested in the evolution of this epistemological system must
establish, again and again, didactic approaches that lead the
way toward new ground in the research of the producer-
viewer relationship that can set new directions in the inter-
pretation of the links between this sensorial flow and its
reciprocal circulation.
Such is the case of young artists Raquel Ponce (Las Palmas de
Gran Canaria, 1972) and Gregorio Viera (Santa Cruz de Tener-
ife, 1971). Both are committed to this ideal of art as a system
of knowledge, serving as a tool for an interrogation of being
as a binary system of “post-computerized, post-informatized”
questions.
It does indeed bother me when a viewer (trained or not) ex-
pects art to provide answers.
The answers are given by life itself, by philosophy, by systems
of cultural studies, by sociology, social science and econom-
ics—not by art, which is its representation, its staging.
Art should only offer us questions, uncertainties, failures, un-
knowns, so that from there, from the transient state of uncer-
tainty, we can sketch out a number of explorations where
reality reinterprets itself, representing itself.
Such is the case of Raquel Ponce, who, through an interpella-
tive art, sets in motion the doubt in our gaze when we look
at her work. In Raquel’s pieces, the documentary trace of a
performed reality exempts from guilt any attempt at confronta-
tional realism—whether analogical or logical—radically obso-
lete in the century of imaginaries.
She perceives truth as a moment, and explores for us the
paths of the body’s reinvented fiction, the inquiring, doubting
fiction, the anthropological-ontological fiction of a 20th-cen-

tury woman whose brushstroke drips paint into the 21st
century, leaving an emblem of herself set in motion as
emptiness, as a sign, an in-conclusion, or an islet that trem-
bles, floats, goes missing, unfolds itself, departs, reappears in
its non-being.
On the other hand, Gregorio Viera is a namer —the exact
opposite of Ponce. He potentializes “the name of things” (as
the poet Eliseo Diego would say), while Raquel Ponce un-
names, keeps the subject from experiencing its own actions
when she trivializes or blurs that experience. Gregorio
presents that experience as a distorted truth that’s been
imposed, reinterpreted, theatricalized again and again above
that which the subject brushes or touches or smears with
its gaze, tainting it with the subject’s own aura. It’s that pu-
trid side or part of himself that each art speculator (in the
words of Benjamin) leaves behind as a diseased aspect of
ourselves, but that somehow serves as a life-saving hemor-
rhage, as a cleansing bloodletting.
He rebaptizes what surrounds him, as if he were an animal
marking its territory through the secretion of enzymes and
olfactory hormones, thus re-signifying it from a much more
Duchampian pragmatics, less pheonomenological, more se-
mantic, more linguistic than formalist, more poetic-narrative
than documentary in its structure
Both heirs to the Warholean legacy of consumption in which
we live; both heirs to the Beuysean legacy of re-mythologizing
and de-mythologizing our present; heirs to Nam June Paik’s
“post-medial explorations” (as Brea used to say, RIP); or to
the performative experience of reality of Bruce Nauman, Vitto
Acconci, Marina Abramovic (the first purists); or the residual
Actionism—brutal and turbulent—of Paul McCarthy, Mike Ke-
lley, and Tony Oursler, not to mention Spanish teacher-artist-
performers like Juan Hidalgo, Esther Ferrer, Peter Garhel,
Marcel-lí Antúnez, or La Ribot.
They assume the day-to-day as an eternal performance of hap-
pening, which inscribes on itself an instinctive label, sensorial,
crammed with knowledge but not yet reified as data or sign;
it only reveals itself and/or allows a glimpse of itself as a cre-
vice, a flight, a lapse.
It is like being in that un-namable state of knowing, having so-
mething on the tip of the tongue, but unable to say it.
Perhaps because our rationality prevents it, when we speak of
irrationality.
Or, rather than speaking, we visualize (conceptually) the non-
reason of the post-Debordian spectacle’s amoral universe. This
universe charged with sensuality, corporeality, and overdose,
where we are today, still restless, still doubtful, still putting
everything into question.
The polarity between performance
and media cherished by performance
ideologues has been replaced by a
capricious dialectic: every profession,
every job, every private life —in other
words, every performance— can
claim an entitlement to reproduction,
and at the same time every conceiv-
able media model may be lived out
and performed.2

The bonds established in contemporary art have resolutely
spread out to reach other disciplines; our concept of art as
an object to contemplate has been left in the background.
It is a multiline system that can imply duplicity, crossing or
inflection, and can communicate arts, science, history as a
whirl through space, with the possibility to emerge at any
point. The strategies of representation aren’t but the stra-
tegies in time, a heterogeneous type of time without an ex-
plicit structure that could constitute a story, but is indeed
solid enough to talk to us about our present ways of living
and some methods of configuration of the contemporary
collective consciousness. Therefore, some artists do not
pursue to show their works as a mechanism of significance
anymore, but rather as a logic that considers the individual
as the expression of something that is taking place, of the
individual’s dispersal in a certain state of the art. An art
where the individual implicit in the authorship of the works
intends to fade out, so that creator and audience become
closer. A kind of look that aims at guiding the eye towards
a reality in constant dissolution, coping with the feeling of
absence, even the absence of identity; passing through the
margins of the idea by means of de-centering, dispersal, the
sense of alienation. All this allows for the spatial transcrip-
tion of an erratic inner universe –in its constant change, and
only because of it, destined to be a fragment, without a cen-
ter or a completion–, and manages to make a revelation out
of the incomplete. Says Peter Handke about the artist’s ins-
piration: “I was certain I had something astounding in the
tip of the tongue. And the only idea that came into my mind
was: representing” [1].
With our desires, we make up that process of seduction
that involves preparing ourselves, and almost always a se-
duction of the languages, a play with time that gives us
more pleasure that the achievement of our goals, of our
projects. The posing of something unfinished, the state of
something incomplete, in meticulous detail; the isolation
within the framework of a constructive process provides
enrichment to such an extent that it turns the actual rea-
lization unnecessary.

Bearing in mind that the idea is prior to the finished work, Ra-
quel Ponce intends to deepen into the ways in order to un-
dertake a project, a research about technology, the own body,
the internal organization of the image and the interaction of
the viewer with –and in– it, trying to disclose what underlies,
hidden, in everyday life, and going through spatial and temporal
notions by means of the installation art. A sort of search that
moves from the workshop to the exhibition space, plunging,
at the same time, into the investigation of video as a medium:
a space for reflection, set design, performance, transience and
dramatic rhythm.

Not a mere documentary display, but a “recreation of the ex-
perience” where art and artistic objects, and the intention of
making art, are the substance, and, at the same time, what gives
the discourse its consistency. A discourse about space and the
language that expresses us, a “confusion” induced in actions
that highlight the normality of uncertainty in the creative pro-
cess and in our whole existence.
The nucleus that provides the meaning is an existential net-
work with its physical presence, that is to say, its physical image
and its symbolic resonance. A staging–dramatization of some-
thing that is in full view of everyone, but sometimes invisible:
the interval and the feeling of the preface. A description, such
as one in a dictionary –which, once made, leads to the subtle
transformation of the idea, of the glance; the movement of the
creative act now turns to the ephemeral, to non-objectualism.
But the transmission of ideas isn’t deprived of materiality: its
field of experiment, the rough draft.
There, we are shown an “off-screen in space and time” or the
margins of a place which, as at the cinema, indicates what nor-
mally slips out of the framing. This reconstruction of the interval
activates the motif that inspires the carrying out of the work.
Inspiration seems to be a device of time that strays and gets
lost but Raquel Ponce finds time to recreate this fragile struc-
ture in her work “Back”. There she integrates the fiction of
her reality in the construction process of her work and the
recording of a time–space. The latter means the negation of a
previous one with regard to a continuum, and this phenome-
nological nature places the corpus of this work between the
document and its waste materials. It shows actions recorded
in an amateur fashion: there she moves around among diffe-
rent elements in the environment of her studio. Observing
the way how the body gets associated with this specific space,
we think about benchmarks such as the Actionism of the 70’s
and works where artists interact with their studio walls. Ar-
tists like Bruce Nauman availed himself of concepts developed
by Lyotard and Merleau-Ponty, where place and subject des-
cribe a tense relationship.
One hall hosts the seven monitors within the stage space of
the installation itself, which, in time, host the video represen-
tation space of the artist’s actions (which also refer to a cer-
tain stage rhythm) in her studio, while in another hall another
closed circuit gets integrated as another fragment of space for
the viewer, who gets into a crossroads. The viewer viewed,
play and labyrinth, something that slips away behind our backs.
The viewer stays within a work passable among screens, inside
a chained system of representation that interlinks several le-
vels: virtual/real; inside/outside. We face a present that, apart
from the physical presence of the staging, takes us to a dimen-
sion of the immaterial image and the deferred time shown on
the videos, but working in real time. This creates an illusion
between what is inside and what is outside the space of the
hall itself. And it produces a tension between the production
moment and the viewer’s contemplation moment, causing
them to attend another time format. This is a type of reality
that enhances the incomplete perception of reality. The alte-
ration proposed by the last video of the installation, replacing
the word end with tape end, hints at something that does not
finish; that, on reaching its end, continues still.
The audiovisual medium is the filter of reality itself. Repetitions
and subtle variations make up the itinerary of the process, of
an unfinished investigation; every scene generates the other
ones, shaping and organizing them. This way, the new deriva-
tions turn up in a sort of stage for uncertainty, multiplying and
pluriscenic, that achieves a condensation of living time. It is
also an image of representation in general, of the conflicts of
imagination and its shams, of the staging of truth, keeping for
this purpose each video as it actually happens.
It is, then, an event experienced as the theorized backstage
within this experimental work, which aims at making the eyes
go through and stop before a kind of scene where elements
don’t impose a structure or a definite type of observation.
Normally, the mechanism displayed around creative work (not
necessarily artistic) doesn’t let us distinguish what underlies
the staging of the work. The image fades away in its own sur-

96
face, which the viewer devours. But, at the same time, the ci-
vilization of the image generates its own counter-discourse,
its own renunciation, and it’s precisely here where the artist
looks for her presentation and significance systems and me-
chanisms: in the visual experience that invites us to the recon-
version of moments and places of everyday reality as subject
matters susceptible to aesthetic and conceptual relevance.
That learning of time that vanishes is the strategy of renun-
ciation; the days get recorded in the studio walls, their result
are the days themselves. The idea of the room is the point of
reference in our culture ; from this point we place ourselves
in space and before the world; it becomes the stage where
the management of time and creativity gets rearticulated; not
only regarding the artistic practice but all of the relational and
knowledge possibilities of our lives in a connected world. By
using different tools, different collective formal systems are
brought into the private sphere.
In this sense, this room would function as the zone where the
images can be dismantled and also as a realm of the body. The
gestural and rhythmic feedback invites to a dialog with the
scenic art, so open and prismatic that it allows for equivalen-
ces between movement and artistic work. The mechanism of
the body gives way to a fascination for rhythmical lines. The
activated body is like a seismograph of contemporary society
fighting against its own organization into a hierarchy.
All this would be about the possibility to keep the body safe
–the body as the operation center responding to the vulne-
rability of an accelerated world. The own body and, the same
time, the body connected to other things, is what comes into
this play, representing, in this form of duplicity, “to be in private
being outside”. This allows for an action that reorganizes the
value and significance of this relational framework while being
a private space that is also a place where the public life can
be thought about and constructed.
Texts, blueprints, notes, drawings… word cuttings take the vie-
wer to face the complexity of everyday life.
These notes reflect upon representation and perception
where the artist saves, selects and analyzes the “syntax” with
which we decipher reality, opening interpretation paths. They
reveal some sort of vanishing lines that originate in the un-
certainty of the artistic work in conversation with the theo-
retical discourse; as such, they can be read not as a linear
discourse that comes to an end but as those peripheral notes
that invite to questions and disagreement. These notes require
the complicity of the reader to interpret what has been shown
with their own associations. We aren’t talking here of mere
creation but of the re-interpretation and fragmentation that
open these texts so that they reveal the mechanisms produ-
cing them; these symbols, these codified data that are the keys
to our cultural identification.
This way, we deal with the possibility of a naked account of
things, a story that begins when the computer screen is turned
on and it reproduces a position that is common and shared by
many people. This position qualifies the contemporary individual,
who results from the interactivity that also generates the afore-
mentioned account of things, and from which it is possible to
look for new ways to explore. Through this reconstruction and
re-significance, we find a glossary of signs and movements, both
conceived as an attempt to create models of comprehension of
those processes which determine the vulnerable condition of
creation. It gradually catches different image shots to study and
speculate about projection methods in time and space, in a for-
mal and conceptual experimental work.
It’s the identity game, where the subject matter is the construction
of the self under the cohesion of the same epigraphs, but these,
supported by imagination, can become new figures: the possibility
of gaining power over our own daily management of time.
Because all this bewilderment that arose from the technological
possibilities and our spaces and stories demand some time for
reflection, an estrangement to do and undo things, to experiment
and speculate and dream, always. Only in our time can we find
the necessary closeness to formulate our particular essay.

THE HAZY EXPANSION OF THE CHOREOGRAPHIC CONCEPTIsabel de Narverán
This text wants to hold a dialog, by using reflections and isolated
concepts, with Raquel Ponce’s exhibition “Back”. The text responds
to a singular invitation and is the result of conversations held with
the artist in the course of several months. It isn’t aimed at explain-
ing the exhibition but rather at working as a source of new ideas
that could be useful to think about the piece. In this sense it is an
independent text, which coexists with the textual dimension of the
exhibit, without trying to explain it.
➜ the white cube
In this space, viewers don’t make up a homogeneous audi-
ence, and their relationship with the piece exhibited is in-
dividual. Usually, every visitor decides how much time they
devote to the perception of a work, although this amount
of time is limited in part by the space they have to go
across. The visitor of a gallery or museum normally strolls
around and this stroll, combined with the modulation of
the attention aroused by each work, its immanence, deter-
mines their consumption of time. The duration of the visit
will be the sum and synthesis of this nontransferable ex-
perience, its quality. Moreover, the white cube is an en-
closed, blind space which remains isolated from the
outside in a conscious, apparently neutral way. The works
are placed on its walls and floors exactly as black letters
get placed on the white surface of paper.
➜ the black box
In this space, each viewer makes up the whole audience, an
indefinite mass of people, a group that gathers to watch some-
thing on a certain day, at a certain time, in a specific place. A
meeting is summoned. The people who attend will become a
part of a community of viewers, even though only seldom does
it work as such, as a real community. However, the configura-
tion of the community remains one of the unquestionable
promises of theater as a contact mechanism. At the theater,
the length of what is being shown is defined previously, and
the audience must submit to this condition to perceive the
whole work. Usually, the viewer doesn’t move and remains
seated in the darkness of the hall. It is a space enclosed by
three walls and an imaginary fourth one. The environment is
normally black, which allows for the construction of an illu-
sion: it presents images, objects and bodies as emerging from
the darkness, and getting lit as ideas or remembrances would
be lit in our mind. It works as a grisaille, that uses light to let
us see what was already there, hidden.
➜ in competition
¿How should performative, choreographic, stage practices
be posited within the exhibition space? This is one of the
questions that haven’t been answered yet.
Always in competition and dispute, the theater as a space of
representation and the gallery as a place of exhibition sym-
bolize two different approaches to the viewer’s personality.
Each one of these spaces holds a different ideological paradigm
which, nonetheless, cannot remain isolated and is destined to
communicate with the world surrounding it, with its outside.
As an off-screen that stands out too much, this outside forces
the limits into the inside, distorting the meaning, twisting it,
calling it into question. As a consequence, the viewer’s stability
feels threatened as well.
RAQUEL PONCE - MAQUETACIÓN NUEVA_Maquetación 1 25/09/12 12:53 Página 97
98
In the case of the exhibition space, the pressures over its
limits have happened in a gradual way and in two opposite
directions: a centripetal flow, that attracts and traps the
glance towards the inside of the work, and a centrifugal
force, that moves the viewer away from the centre, making
them pay attention to what exists out of the frame, inviting
them to go beyond their perception limits.
In the theatrical realm, we could identify these two thrusts in
Antonin Artaud’s Theatre of Cruelty and in Bertolt Brecht’s Epic
(Dialectical) Theatre, respectively. While the first invites the
viewer to a full immersion, mental and bodily, into the mysticism
of the stage ritual –an absolute identification by means of the
activation of their senses and perception–, the second calls forth
critical estrangement, interruption, a visible cut for the viewer,
who becomes aware of the artificial construction of the scene.
But between these and those, between the voyage to the in-
side of the senses and the representation, and the dialectical
estrangement, there is always a space for uncertainty and con-
fusion. A period of time where the translucent haze –as said
Brian O’Doherty of the landscape painting of the 19th Cen-
tury– settles an opposition between those artistic pieces
whose meaning and purport remain isolated from the frame
containing them, and those which are influenced by this frame,
and, even more, which influence their frame themselves.
It is here where we could posit the exhibit we are concerned
with right now.
➜ translucent haze
In his well-known book, Inside the white cube, O’Doherty
understands the Romantic landscape painting, with its typ-
ical haze and remote horizons, as a type of painting repre-
senting that interstitial moment where the Renaissance’s
obsession for perspective melds with the interest in tone
and color of Naturalism. It is a moment more defined by
its indetermination and expansion than by the opposition
between both of the movements it manages to reveal.
Let us think of a picture that works as a haze machine, pro-
ducing a constant condensation and dissolution effect, so that
our attention has to flow between the pervasive humidity of
the moments in the darkness, and the distinct brightness of
the moments when the haze recedes. Formlessness in that
state, which is bright and dark at the same time, would appear
before us not as lack of form, but as an experience we plunge
into, an experience that will change us in an irreversible way.
Let us remember that state.
➜ the preceding room
In the preceding room, the centripetal flow room, everything
happens only and exclusively within the frame, inwards, to-
wards the centre; it is a type of representation isolated from
the place containing it. The function of the frame here is only
separating the image from its outside; the frame itself shouldn’t
be seen as a part of the work, but rather as a limit and a bor-
der with everything which is not the work itself. The frame is
that psychological container whose expansion strategy is to
enlarge its depth.
The purpose, in the case of the painting, was to simulate
spaces inside or behind other spaces by using perspective. We
know well about coulisses and repoussoirs (which O’Doherty
defined as the Braille of perspective depth) or the trompe-l’œils
which, in short, try to deceive the eye, give the impression of
distance and fake a certain depth in the field of vision.
Understood as the space before or behind the thing fo-
cused, the depth of field in film and photography doesn’t
refer to the perfectly bright area “but to the distance be-
tween the nearest and farthest objects in a scene, that ap-
pear to be acceptably sharp in an image”.1 According to
some authors, like André Bazin, depth of field was, for cine-
RAQUEL PONCE - MAQUETACIÓN NUEVA_Maquetación 1 25/09/12 12:53 Página 98
99
matography, an alternative to fragmentary montage (de-
coupage) at a moment when cinema aimed at creating new
forms of temporality, other than those produced by action
film. Depth of field fit more and better in that search for
quality in time, a non-spatialized time, a “length” such as that
suggested by vitalist Henri Bergson, opposed to what would
be a compartmentalized, measurable time. This way of con-
stituting action by means of depth was definitely more co-
herent with the principles of time-image than with those of
movement-image mentioned by Gilles Deleuze regarding
cinematography.2
But there are differences with regard to the use of depth
of field in film and in painting. In direct allusion to how the
use of depth of field clearly shows the time dimension in
cinema, Cristian Sánchez argues that, while in modern cin-
ema its use produces an overflow that allows for the intro-
duction of length as real time (direct time-images, according
to Deleuze), in painting depth is made towards the inside,
moving away.3
While one of them pushes us hard to the awareness of here
and now, the other invites us to let us go in the world of phe-
nomena understood simply as sensitive appearances, as rep-
resentations, and not as the things they actually are in our
presence4. In any of the two cases, the depth of field doesn’t
produce a spatial but a temporal sequence, where one state
takes place before or after another one. This depth of field has
more to do with the production of a type of temporality, than
with the division of space between the closest and the furthest
things. Distance is determined by time.
It’s these differences that may become useful when it comes
to thinking about the idea of depth of field itself, or, rather, the
idea of a specific production of length, on stage. What kind of
choreography would be produced and what transformations
would it mean for the viewer? What kind of displacements
would take place? A reflection on the expansion of choreog-
raphy as a stage practice, and as a device that connects differ-
ent focuses of attention, could in turn lead to a broader
reflection upon the idea of the obverse, what comes back and
reverts, or rather, a reflection upon what it would mean to
show the space behind the scenes, the backstage. Under what
space-time conditions could a choreographic process of this
kind take place? Let’s think about this.
➜ the back room
The back room, the one with the centrifugal flow, is the in-
evitable consequence of opening the action scope of the frame.
The frame ceases to be the limit that contains a discourse, or
its interstice; it rather becomes the discourse itself. The artistic
object gets determined to such an extent by the context where
it comes into view, that it becomes its content. O’Doherty iden-
tifies this moment of imposition of the white cube as the set-
ting-up of the ideological paradigm of art in the 20th Century,
which isn’t but the consequence of “a curious inversion: by get-
ting into the gallery, the object frames the exhibition space and
its rules” (O’Doherty 2011:21). It is the object that refers to
the space, framing it, and not otherwise.
The exhibition space, likewise the theatre space, would show
here all their parts in a calculated staging. The allusion to the
RAQUEL PONCE - MAQUETACIÓN NUEVA_Maquetación 1 25/09/12 12:53 Página 99
100
frame of action becomes inevitable. The frame isn’t an insula-
tor any longer, but it gets to determine the content of the
work, it becomes a part of the content. The theatre space and
the exhibition space are mainly machines that produce models
of social relationship (the ideal community in the theatre) as
well as individual and individualized subjects (the attentive sus-
pension that looks for subjectification in the white cube). By
revealing the laws that rule each one of the devices, maybe
there is a possibility to analyze and criticize them.
The theme as such doesn’t exist anymore, unless the theme
is a reflection upon the medium itself. From this perspective,
the self-reference on stage becomes inevitable, and the rep-
resentation impossible. A centrifugal flow of this kind may span
unexpected spheres.
➜ the middle room
The middle room unveils the space that had been censored
behind the scenes, and denotes the real scene, which is, in
turn, the staged reality of the passing of time. It’s a room
thought of as reversible. And maybe it is here where we can
place the exhibit we are talking about.
Between the limits that frame the wager on a far and distant
depth and the belief in a closeness to reality and to the con-
text of here and now, there is everything that is left off screen,
and there is also the frame itself.
The division of space or the determination of a focus inside or
outside the frame is inseparable from the production of a certain
type of temporality; the temporality that must be dwelled on dur-
ing that transition from the centre to the border of the staging.
Velázquez was able to show better than anyone this interme-
diate dwelling between the obsession for perspective that di-
rects attention always inwards and the awareness of being an
individual watching the scene; the individual watching extends
the spatial as well as the temporal perspective, and points to
a new room: the middle room.
In his analysis of Las Meninas, Michel Foucault defines Velázquez’s
work as a system of representation articulated almost exclu-
sively by the choreography of attentions and glances inherent in
the painting. In an exercise of awareness about the machine of
representation, the whole situation of the painting works as a
large mirror where we stare and at the same time get stared at
by the thing inside.
The artist shows, in close-up and using a third of the whole
painting, the representation of the offstage, the space be-
hind the scenes. It is this back side, shown on the painting,
which determines what is fiction there and what is not. It
delimits the direction towards the inside in space and
backwards in time, in opposition to the escape outwards
and forwards.
In Velázquez’s painting, a disguised mirror reflects the glance
of the Kings, thus destabilizing the established spatial-temporal
logics. But, no matter the effort to get camouflaged among the
mirrors hanging on the wall at the bottom, the mirror reflect-
ing the actual reality always stands out for its excessive shine.
In Velázquez’s piece, this mirror shows the Kings, but above all
it gives away the viewer, who is also an object of the artist’s
deferred view –that remains off screen, precisely in the place
where we are, precisely at that moment–.
If, as Hans Belting remarks, “the mirror was invented with
the purpose of seeing bodies precisely there where there’s
no body at all” (Belting 2007: 31): which body can be found
there right now? The viewer’s body? The real body? No.
What this mirror presents are not the bodies, but some-
thing happening between them, the choreography of their
relationship.
➜ anticipation
That famous lantern joke tells the story of a man who, on his
way to the house where he is going to ask for help, begins to
think of the likely reactions of the people living there, whom
he hasn’t met yet.
RAQUEL PONCE - MAQUETACIÓN NUEVA_Maquetación 1 25/09/12 12:53 Página 100
101
After figuring out all sorts of scenes of what might happen
when he gets there, he actually arrives. He knocks at the door
and, before the people in the house can even react, the man
leaps on them shouting and insulting and provokes a bizarre,
violent and unpleasant situation.
In the eyes of those who open the door, the man coming to
ask for help seems to be a lunatic or a madman. Rushing into
an absurd defense of himself, the man goes ahead the events,
he moves forward in the story on his own.
Too often we would rather not have rushed into the events,
not have been wrong at guessing what others were thinking
or feeling. Too often, the time elapsing between the planning
of an event and the event itself becomes the territory of a
mental battle to ponder over the rival’s possible movements
and work out our best reactions in consequence.
Not even when attending the theatre or the museum are we
free of these anticipations. We arrive there with our expecta-
tions and pieces or information about life and art which will
certainly define our way to “talk” with the work we see. “Don’t
you have the feeling that, when you see the beginning of a show,
you already know whether you are going to like it or not?” –
asked choreographer Juan Domínguez at the beginning of one
of his pieces5. That is what Tino Seghal later called the drama
of judgement, one of the biggest dramas in art. Juan Domínguez
anticipated that judgement, making it visible even when it hadn’t
been born in our minds. With his question, what he did was
aborting the inertia of a judgement, and replacing it.
Nobody is safe from a provocation of this sort. Particularly
because, beyond the value judgement we are projecting, what
comes unveiled is a way of relationship and learning that must
be examined.
A group of artists, performers of the piece Low Pieces (2009)
by Javier le Roy, are sitting together with the choreographer
on the stage, welcoming the audience on arrival. Once they
have taken place in the stands, the artists offer to start an open
conversation. What looks like a preliminary talk is in fact the
first part of the piece. This beginning aspires, on one hand, to
bring into view the determinants of theatre as a situation of
unequal relationship, and, on the other, to enable a real com-
munication between groups of people.
This encounter between the people on stage (who have a
specific training and experience) and the viewers (who are
also constituted by what they already know and have pre-
viously experienced) has a planned length of fifteen min-
utes, after which the lights go off at once. This gives way
to the second part of the piece and the previous conver-
sation remains unfinished. How will this conversation of
the first part influence the images we will see afterwards?
Every anticipation is a projection that arises from what we
have learned and experienced. Every interpretation is a com-
parison based on what we have already seen and what we are
seeing for the first time. And maybe this is the only way to
learn. Jacques Rancière was very explicit in this sense, when,
in his proposal of intellectual emancipation, highlighted the in-
evitable act of translation carried out in every learning
process: we identify and compare what we know with what
we don’t know, and that’s how we learn6.
During the time of our visit to the exhibition or while we are
seeing a piece at the theatre, thousands of thoughts and in-
ternal dialogs get produced. These soliloquies, judgements and
observations, perceptions and feelings, take place within time;
they make up the duration of our experience, they modulate
our attention, they expand and enlarge the frame of action.

➜ The expanded field
In April 2012, in Barcelona, Mårten Spångberg organized an in-
ternational seminar called “Expanded Choreography: situations,
movements, objects…”7, in direct reference to Rosalinde Krauss’
influential essay Sculpture in the expanded field (1978). Like Krauss’
text, the seminar at Barcelona meant a motion in favor of the
legitimization, within the history of art, of a series of ideas that
could not be easily classified. It also pointed out the clear need
to contextualize choreography as an expanded practice.
The seminar articulated and related discourses originated in dif-
ferent realms of knowledge (philosophy, engineering, sociology,
art, curatorship...), the focal point of which was the concept of
choreography itself. Choreography isn’t understood here as a
notation system for dance8, but rather as a staging of a textual
practice that is extensive and extended in its forms, where dance
could be one of its many expressions and not the only one.
Therefore, this isn’t about the idea of extended choreography
as something happening in the body and for the body, but as
something taking place among the bodies, which stands for a so-
cial operation and considers other bodies, not only human.
This meeting was held within the frame of the exhibition “Ret-
rospective by Xavier le Roy”, which the choreographer Xavier
le Roy curated at the Fundació Antoni Tàpies.
It was in response to the invitation of its present director, Lau-
rence Rassel, to make a two months exhibition at the Fun-
dació’s customary halls.
The production of this exhibit, articulated choreographically
(and not through exhibited objects or specific moments of ac-
tion and exhibition), aims at reasserting a practice that has
been developing at least from the nineties, but only now gets
to be properly identified. It deals with the admission that the
concept of choreography has become little by little dissoci-
ated from the usual definitions of dance, which are still marked
by a symptomatic legacy of Modernism, making the discipline
a victim of its constant flow and its disappearance.
In 2006, Bojana Cvejić published the text “Learning by making,
and making by learning how to learn”9. There, Cvejić com-
ments on the displacement carried out by some choreogra-
phers in Europe, in the nineties. We might describe this
displacement as a trip that starts with the production and
spreading of the work and gets to the self-organization and
the reflection upon the action ways of dance and upon the
existent production systems. Cvejić points, as the cause of this
irreversible change, at the radical appearance of certain phi-
losophy trends, such as Critical Theory or Post-structuralism,
in the field of dance.
Of course, not any theory or even theory in general could pro-
duce a critical displacement of this kind. The influence exerted
some decades before by authors like Walter Benjamin, J. L. Austin,
Judith Butler, Barthes, Derrida or Deleuze on the discursive ar-
ticulation of the visual arts, becomes clear in the frame of dance
in Europe in the nineties. We could say that the Critical Theory
and the Frankfurt School of the twenties and the thirties stood
for inner reflection and revision of the production ways of
RAQUEL PONCE - MAQUETACIÓN NUEVA_Maquetación 1 25/09/12 12:54 Página 102
103
knowledge, and, much later, Post-structuralism stood for Meta-
linguistics and experimentalism over its own action ways. As in
a spread and rebound effect, it could also be said that choreog-
raphy stands for all these things when it decides to become
emancipated from the modern definition of dance, which oth-
erwise restricts itself to a body in constant movement.
The new concept of choreography conveys a reflection upon
its operating and acting ways in a realm bigger than the body,
but this doesn’t mean that choreographers, now and then, re-
nounce the context of dance: what they do is defend a chore-
ographic idea that enhances and extends all the previous
definitions. Therefore, this doesn’t imply a denial of dance, for
the simple reason that it is precisely within the frame of dance
where its critical and reflective attitude makes sense the most,
although it never refuses other action areas and their conse-
quent advance towards the territory of the visual arts.
Theoretician Pirkko Husemann remarked, already in 2005, that
the artists themselves had defined their works as choreogra-
phies, even though dance, as we know and understand it,
wasn’t really visible on stage. In an exercise of self-criticism,
this new dance, this choreographic practice “ is rather a meta-
dance that critically reflects its own procedures through praxis
and offers the viewer the experience of that reflection”
(Husemann, 2005).
The critical reflection upon the role of the viewer conveys
also a revision of the models of social relationship implied by
the machines that dance had used to operate, such as theatre,
despite its transformations. In this sense, it seems inevitable
to think about other dimensions of this relationship, like the
frame of visibility, and the time used by the viewer for the per-
ception of a work.
The concept of “expanded choreography” might position itself
in this potential field of dance as a subtraction of itself, which
invites to a new reflection on its procedures and on the
viewer’s personality nowadays, and it does it while moving
continuously and calling into question the strength of the par-
adigms established in the white cube, as well as its own para-
digms.
This hazy and permeable expanse demands an inescapable re-
vision on the determinants inherent in the machines and de-
vices that frame its practices.

“Hello, Juan.
I am writing to tell you a couple of things about the
exhibit I’m preparing.
Maybe you remember me say that, for the catalogue,
apart from the usual text, an interview will be pub-
lished as well. I’d like it to be different from the text,
not academic; in my opinion, it would be ideal to make
the interview with another artist, and… er… I thought
you might interested… you know I‘ve been trying to
“catch” you for a while now. What do you think about
this?
Are you in? We could make it via e-mail, as an epistolary
and/or on-site record… with camera recordings… we
could make it in Madrid and/or Las Palmas… I don’t
know, I believe there are many possibilities
Well, Juan, there’s my invitation… I hope you like it.
A huge kiss.
Raque.”
After accepting Raquel’s invitation, we agreed on a method by
which I would ask her a series of questions that would make us
think about certain issues and place ourselves as artists in the
different and distinguished situations each one is going through
right now. This way, by setting a routine of one question every
three days, we would have time to keep a certain spontaneity
and, at the same time, deepen into every suggested theme.
The first question was a starting point, a question I would ask
any artist, especially myself. In my opinion, this question pro-
vokes an immediate positioning between the work you are
carrying out and the present time we are living; it involves the
problem of connecting our subjectivity with the history of the
concept “Radicalism”.
1 J- I don’t know if you want to be related to the concept
“Radicalism”, but I would like to start this interview talking
about it in order to take a position from the very beginning.
Can you tell me where you see Radicalism in art nowadays
and where would you place it in your own work?
R- I’m interested in Radicalism from a methodological point
of view. I believe the more radical, categorical and forceful the
work, the more interesting the result. Now, since it is an ex-
tremely dangerous concept, I try to relate with it very cau-
tiously, not too radically.
In my work, what I aim at is being coherent with the idea and,
from there, with the mechanism and device that make it work
and develop; all the same, I try to apply this concordance in
the installation, staging, length, features of the exhibition space
and, of course, in how and to what extent the audience can
participate in it.
On the other side, what does “being radical” mean? I believe
Radicalism depends on the moment and place of exhibition;
maybe the most radical thing for me is subtlety, the radical
simplicity and subtlety of things.
2 J-When you say you are not interested in Radicalism
as a result, what do you mean exactly?, what is it that
you don’t like of a radical result? And more: what is a
result?
R-What I’m interested the least in, is when Radicalism goes
together with provocation. Provocation can turn into a dan-
gerous tool, used at the service of any content, a content that
has nothing to do with the idea. In the work by Santiago Sierra,
for instance, his provocation is necessary and reasonable, but

I don’t like it when it is merely a challenge without any corre-
lation to the result. When I speak of “result”, I mean the prod-
uct resulting from many different decisions. I don’t believe a
“non-result” can ever be constructed. What would that mean?
An empty space? A white canvas? Nothing to listen to? The
invisible, the inaudible or immaterial is still a result in itself.
3 J- I am curious about the relationship between Rad-
icalism and subtlety. Being radical through subtlety.
I’m attracted to the idea of subtle politics, a subtle ed-
ucation, a subtle art, but without separating from Rad-
icalism or even excess. Maybe, precisely at this
moment, radical-subtle is a good combination. What
have you achieved through subtlety? Where would you
place subtlety in your work?
R- Yes, without any doubt, it is an interesting combination of
two opposite but complementary things. Mi head just goes off:
“brutal subtlety”, “subtlety of the extreme”, “pornographic
subtlety”…
I think Radicalism implies immediacy, speed in the execution;
working processes that are too long run the risk of expiring,
of losing the strength of the original idea. On the contrary,
subtlety requires a higher capacity of abstraction, of a gradual
simplification of forms, of special attention and analysis until
you reach the minimum, the bare essentials, the essence of the
idea itself, of the thing we want to say. Subtlety doesn’t offend,
it doesn’t cause conflict or tension between work and viewer,
and it requires enough ability to suggest rather than impose –
while keeping the idea firm and strong–. In my work, I try to
stay in an intermediate place and realize the convenience of
one position or the other: when I have to be more direct and
forceful, and when not. I think it is important to understand
the necessary methodologies and processes for each one of
the cases; it is the idea that determines its different possibilities
of presentation, so I try to convey them in the most objective
manner and be at their service. I aim at understanding the “in-
tonation”, the energy, the way it all has to take to reach its
destination with the least interference possible. In short, I am
alert to perceive when the work is finished; one extra brush-
stroke can spoil a good idea, but, likewise, a stroke too little
can be unsatisfactory. I try to take the opposite view of the
idea but only up to reasonable limits, and work hard to be
subtle and precise at a time.
What’s conclusive about the work I’m doing right now, Back,
is that I’m trying to hide, to snatch from the viewer’s view
what actually there is to see. I try to make them think about
the thing they’re seeing, or rather about the thing they’re not
seeing at all. I don’t show the crossing-out, but the result al-
ready crossed out, while leaving behind some clues, some re-
mains of the thing crossed out. In this sense, the signs and
traces I finally decide to show define the strength –or lack of
strength– of the final result.
4 J- In some other works, you use splitting, deconstruc-
tion, multiplicity, and, to develop all of this, you gener-
ally use your body and your biography.
Then, why this matter and not any other? Is there an
image of yourself that you want to suggest with all
those tools and dynamics?
R- Yes, indeed, in my work I use plenty of splitting and multi-
plicity of the image and the “reality”, replacing what is sup-
posed to happen with what I actually want to happen in order
to cause a short-circuit, a displacement and a feeling of
strangeness about reality; a sort of paranoid schizophrenia of
reality, which forces the viewer to continuously check what is
going on.
What I search and pursue is how this gets done; how the ac-
tion happens and develops; how everything is presented, more
than what happens or what is actually re-presented. That is
why I use my image and my body as the closest thing I have at
disposal to do “anything”. This way, I like to think you can re-
verse the slogan “less is more” using “more is less” instead.
So, by means of the superposition of layers and different levels
of meaning, by paneling and interfering in the thing that hap-
pens, I aim at achieving less to see, but more to imagine.
On the other side, my work methodology is very empirical: I
try, I verify, I combine, I repeat, I relate, I undo… that is why

106
the fact that it’s me who places herself before a camera is
something more incidental than intentional, a practical way to
work and make the process more dynamic. I know all this
might sound a bit contradictory, and maybe it is indeed, but,
paradoxically, I do not intend to talk about myself, I do not
want to produce a counter-image of myself: I just use myself
as an experience tool, as a vehicle to build an image, a situa-
tion, a type of reality…
Probably the use of my body, of my own biography, is also due
to my training as an actress and a dancer, a deoxyribonucleic
acid tattooed in my creative genetics, a hereditary gene ac-
cording to which my nature is to become the interpreter of
my own creations.
5 J- In your discourse, you use the concept “reality” a lot.
What do you call reality? Is there more than one reality?
If so, and you are in several of them, where, in which one,
would you place your work? You say also that, paradoxi-
cally, you don’t speak of yourself but you rather use your-
self in order to build an image, a situation, a type of
reality. I assume that images, situations and realities are
different in each work. Or rather there is something in
particular that recurs in many or all of them?
R- When I use the complex and elusive concept of reality, I
refer to a subjective, ephemeral and artificial construction and
with as many possibilities of “realities” as the emitters and re-
cipients that build and/or observe them. Something that is built
in a continuous present and only a second later may become
another artificial construction until everything turns into an
infinite cycle of micro realities. The punctum mentioned by
Barthes is only a way to name the unexpected and irrational
way in which we attempt to understand reality. We cannot
represent the whole reality, but, in any case, a micrology of it.
Since reality is elusive by nature, any attempt to present a mo-
ment, a parcel, a hint of it isn’t but a reality inside another re-
ality. An impossible achievement. And that which cannot be
captured, limited, framed, is something we cannot take for ex-
istent. For me, the essential problem would be –more than
going further on in the difficulty of its definition– the “repre-
sentability” of reality, how it gets produced and perceived, and
by which means and tools it could be represented. In this
sense, the manipulation of the time in which it happens lets
me understand its possible representations. The time it rep-
resents, but also the time in which the action is presented and
represented, determine and construct different realities.
When I place myself before a camera, I accept the unreal and
fictional about the situation. Everything changes, I constitute
myself in the act of posing, I detach from myself with the
awareness of the artifice. Before the lens, I am the one I want
to be, and, at the same time, the one I want everybody to be-
lieve I am; an imitation of myself, a deception at the service of
the device chosen to build the illusion of the “reality effect”.
When, consciously and deliberately, I try to frame, to catch a
fragment of reality among thousands of possibilities, I am also
discarding and severing others. But, for the specific case of the
exhibit I’m working on, Back, it is precisely that which is not
there within the frame, which does not get represented, the
hidden reality, what I want to show, or, in this case, rather “not
to show”. In this sense Back uses interval, intermezzo, the
“half-time”, the spatial off-screen as well as the temporal off-
screen. The part that is veiled and lacking in the action causes
the disconnection between the reality recorded by the camera
and the one experimented, a strangeness of the short-circuit,
that should activate the need to rebuild the snatched temporal
and spatial interval in the viewer, as well as their capacity of
evocation and construction of realities; of filling the deliberate
emptiness in the construction of the piece.
As regards your second question, if there is something that
recurs at all, that is my working methodology. In the first
months of work, disorder is maximum: I’m very chaotic at
work, I love it. I like to think that imprecision can be some
form of precision too. When I start work, I don’t find anything
I’m looking for, but I do find things I wasn’t looking for, and I
begin to add them gradually. At the beginning I keep piling
things up in an obsessive Diogenes syndrome. I keep jumping
and mixing things up, this with that, and idea with another, an
image with another; I combine them, I transform them until I
begin to define their limits, their rules, the rail I can take to
move on and start undoing the knot. These delimitations make
RAQUEL PONCE - MAQUETACIÓN NUEVA_Maquetación 1 25/09/12 12:54 Página 106
107
me prioritize certain materials over others, throw away re-
sults, materials, images and situations of the process –by iden-
tifying their leftovers. Ángel González points out that “what is
there in excess is always what is missing, what remains in the
shadow”, but, in my specific case, what I want to do is taking
these things out of the shadow, in order to present what’s ex-
cluded together with what’s included. Leftovers are very rel-
evant to me because they contain the memory of the result,
the skeleton of the process. So, these situations and realities
you’re asking me about do recur and get included, in this resid-
ual sense I mean. Narcisa, Sin título, Corpografías (Narcisa, Unti-
tled, Corpographies) are all works where the process is a part
of the result, which does not mean that the work is unfinished
or incomplete.
6 J-When you speak of building an image, which image
do you mean? And what do you pursue by building it?
If it is, for example, about provoking a short-circuit in
the viewer, which impact do you expect you will cause
with this short-circuit?
R-When I speak of the image and its construction, I use
the term as a synonym of situation, of construction of “re-
ality”. But, what is this reality and how can it be built? If
we watch children play, they build their reality through the
simple slogan: “Let’s pretend that…”. So, the child says
“Let’s pretend we are in a car and this piece of wood is
the steering wheel and…”. And, when they want to change
it, it goes like this: “Let’s pretend we are not in the car any-
more but in a party, and this piece of wood is a bottle, and
you…”. It’s an endless game of construction of realities
where everybody implicitly agrees to respect the “Let’s
pretend” formula. This way they establish and limit the re-
alities they decide to play with, they communicate all the
new decisions so that the rest of the children –that is to
say the audience– can go on codifying the play-reality.
Regarding your question as to what I want to provoke
with the short-circuit, it’s this: in the very few seconds
when it takes place, the viewer should reconstruct what
is going on and try to see why this transformation is hap-
pening. What is it that has been changed? Through the
short-circuit, I try to activate the attention on what is
being viewed and how it is happening. I try to move the
importance of what is happening towards the question
how it is happening. I try to produce that moment of
“OK, now I understand what’s going on” and, at the same
time, achieve a moment of maximum complicity with the
viewer. A sort of magic, something that is very simple or
even silly, but that lets the trick and game of “Let’s pre-
tend” get understood and accepted. A second of uncer-
tainty, of unstable and elusive reality.
In Narcisa for instance, I use the camera zoom to vary the
frame and this way I can change, I can short-circuit the viewer’s
perception of space. In the same work, when the camera is
placed zenithally, so that it allows for a viewpoint radically dif-
ferent from that of the viewers, these have to verify what is
happening and at the same time what is being constructed.
The videos of the Drawing series may also be an example of
how, with something as simple as the use of reverse, this
strangeness can be achieved. I mean, this breakdown in the
functioning of reality or this “mystery” exposed by Magritte
when he shows us the image of a pipe and, at the same time,
he points out “This is not a pipe”.
7 J- I see this in your work and in your discourse: what
you call mechanism, –which could be identified as “how”
you offer the “what”–, has a major relevance. I also be-
lieve that you deal with the “what” as mere material to
develop the “how”. Aren’t you afraid that the “how”
gets to be so tangled in itself that it ends up being use-
less? It is a question that I also ask myself as a “how”
fan. A linguist once told me that they, linguists, call real-
ity the extra-linguistic world. Meanwhile, they keep working
in another world, related to it, but a different one, with
its own laws and rules. How close to the more tangible,
everyday reality do you feel yourself?
R-As Roland Barthes remarks, the words we use can only be
explained with other words. And, just like this, I believe that
only with realities can we build different realities. Television
RAQUEL PONCE - MAQUETACIÓN NUEVA_Maquetación 1 25/09/12 12:54 Página 107
108
and advertising are codifiers of realities; the “reality shows”
aren’t but a means of showing reality, not reality itself. I’m not
very certain of how I got to this way of building that “reality”
–more or less tangible– you are asking about, what I know is
that I’m interested in a type of virtual reality that lets me lie,
I want to pervert it in the most true to life, normal way that
is possible. In many of my works, the camera, its own framing,
but also the mirrors and frames I’ve used, function as windows
that frame other realities, that multiply different ways of ex-
perimenting it.
On the other side, and as you very well remark, my top inter-
est is how an event can be built, more than the event itself. As
I have mentioned before, first I build and decide methodolog-
ically the prohibitions –what is not allowed to happen–; then,
and bearing this in mind, I decide which the rules will be –how
something must happen–, and, lastly, what the game is about.
For the specific case I’m working on right now, the selected
subject matter –Backstage– is the what and the how at the
same time. I use the linguistic loan “behind the scenes” as a
metaphor of my work and position behind the scenes, behind
the visual arts, trying to combine their rules and prohibitions
in order to create my own game.
The Backstage contains and builds a device according to which
whatever happens within its space, behind the scenes or off-
stage, is before the action, preparation, before something takes
place, but also after all this. I intend to invert its spatiality so
that the thing we see is not what we are usually able to see –
after all, any side from any other perspective is a reverse or a
backstage.
The backstage implies different strategies of denying the visual,
in opposition to the strategies of asserting the visual –the ex-
cess of information that Miguel A. Hernández calls information
bulimia, as opposed to information anorexia–, and therefore
what it all is about, more than “seeing too much”, would be
“seeing almost nothing”: the experience of the limits, the frus-
tration and failure of the glance. Does this explanation make
any sense to you?
As to your remark on the possibility that the device or the
“how” might disable the “what”, I believe it is a risk I have to
run. It all depends on the fair and necessary concessions and
decisions taken against the own system, but, above all, on the
strategies and tactics we choose to change the rules in our
benefit, while using them indeed. The radicalism of the slogans
must be examined and updated.
8 J- To round this interview off, I would like you to tell
us a bit more about Back, the work you are exhibiting
at CAAM.
You have said before that you want to offer a before
and after the action that is supposed to take place. You
focus on the potentiality and the memory of some-
thing we don’t know. Something that doesn’t even
exist. You claim the legitimacy of a space-time that ex-
tends desire, activation, the gesture of starting some-
thing, but also affection. There is no cause, there is no
development, but there is jumping and, in any case, a
dead time or a wrong time. I mean the video where
you show all the mistakes and a useless time. Would
you speak a bit about this space-time?
R-The process has been hard, long and disappointing most of
the days; I’ve spent months searching, building a piece with the
deliberate purpose of hiding it; with the attention focused on
failure, uncertainty, preparation, chaos, mistake, in order to
build a piece that finally hasn’t achieved its definition, a piece
non-existent, a pure potentiality –as you say–, pure effect with-
out any cause or development. When I take the binomial
cause-effect and I remove the cause, leaving only the effect,
what I try to provoke is a relocation, but also a “de-contextu-
alization of time”. An interruption in the “natural” and logical
evolution of the action. By showing only the effect and hiding
the cause, I try to make people think about what happens off
the camera screen, what happens in another space and time
or, in other words, behind and before the action. This way, the
off-screen becomes a stage, a sort of theatre space, where you
can highlight the useless and discard the useful.
The dead or empty time here is the leftovers of useful time.
By using it, I intend to create and produce new realities, situ-
ations and possibilities dealing with the unproductive, in order
RAQUEL PONCE - MAQUETACIÓN NUEVA_Maquetación 1 25/09/12 12:54 Página 108

to turn it into a product. The purpose is to define the indefi-
nite, to organize and structure the chaos of the back room –
something that doesn’t really belong in the scene, but is nec-
essary to let the scene happen–. On the other hand, that
empty time is also the time for reflection and thinking, it is the
backstage of discourse and at the same time the backstage of
the action. That’s why I’ve tried to emphasize that space-time
you wonder about.
In short, I wanted to build a piece from the “backstage” while
actually using the backstage as an element in the process of
creation; to find a tongue-twisterish explanation for a work that
is broken, asymmetric, quartered, and that would never end if
it weren’t for the opening date. When would be the beginning
and the time before the action and when the end and the time
after-the-action? That is my question. Why not including the
real conditions of production as well, the contractual condi-
tions, the features of the exhibit space? Isn’t this interview a
part of Back too? Or, even better: aren’t our comments and
explanations to the questions and answers sent by e-mail also
a part of this back I’m looking for?
